Kingston - Verna Oakley[edit]

The other day I edited Oakley's party affiliation to Workers, based on the newspaper results tables (SMH and Canberra Times), and her candidature for the Progress Party in 1977. But the Election Statistics booklet doesn't call her "WP" (and it does for the other two WP candidates in South Australia), and almost two thirds of her preferences went to the Liberal Party, so voters didn't seem to recognise her as socialist. (Unless they were preferencing the Libs to hasten the revolution....) I leave this ambiguous situation on the talk page, with no complaints from me if it's edited back to "Ind". The Workers Party wasn't a socialist party at all, but a free-market outfit founded by John Singleton. This was actually why they changed their name to the Progress Party, because people kept asking them why they had such a socialist-sounding name. Their preferences would naturally flow to the Liberal Party ahead of Labor. Not sure about Oakley, but if the SMH and Canberra Times tables refer to her as WP, it's possible the statistics booklet might be wrong. Have you checked the parliamentary handbooks?
