Traditionally, cardiac surgery is performed by one of two medical professionals: Either cardiologists who further undertake general surgery training for a designated period, or whose surgical residence comprises sufficient mandatory/elective general surgery internment that satisfies the relevant medical board's standard competency requirements, or graduates/recipients of the CCT (certificate of completion of training) in cardiothoracic surgery. Furthermore, a cardiologist may elect to perform procedures that require minimally invasive/Robotic Assisted methodologies. It is essential to note that, in the west, heart transplant procedures are not performed by cardiothoracic surgeons but by a transplant surgeons whose training also consists of extensive training in immunohistology and immunochemistry. Amongst the surgical sub-specialities, this novel discipline is widely considered one of the most advanced as well as prestigious surgical specialities.

This text about cardiologist is not applicable in North America - perhaps this is valid in Europe? I suspect this text was written by a European given the spelling of paedatric. Perhaps someone could add info about training in other countries.

The text about heart transplants in "the west" is incorrect in North America, however the patients are usually followed by cardiologist with training in immunohistology and immunochemistry. This point should be discussed in the heart transplant page, not here.
The "prestigious" part is somewhat POV, but this would be more applicable in the cardiac surgery page with the present phrasing. There is no reason this shouldn't be on this artice. Dlodge 17:15, 28 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Cardiac surgery is a high stakes profession (where the patients die quickly or get better[1]) and it requires long years of training. Personally, I think it would be fair to say cardiac surgery is prestigious. In any case, what I think doesn't matter so much... it just has to be appropriately referenced.(WP:REF, WP:CLINMED/Writing_medical_articles) MDs are well respected(MPs top the list for least respected profession, say Today listeners -- BBC); I imagine there is a link out there somewhere about cardiac surgeons being respected... and being considered prestigious. Prestigious seems to be a term that is subject to POV no matter how many sources back it up. Though I would agree it is, others may not and they're not wrong just because I don't agree. Which is how POV works, and also why wikipedia tries to limit bias as much as possible. | pulmonological talkcontribs 16:56, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

globalization[edit]

Based on the above comments ("not applicable in North America - perhaps this is valid in Europe?"), I assumed that this article had information about Europe. However, all the details are about the US and Canada, so I'm giving up for today. Please consider selecting one of the many sub-options at Template:Globalize if you choose to restore this tag. thanks, WhatamIdoing (talk) 20:15, 4 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]
