Books.[edit]

This page is woefully incomplete in terms of this author's publications and their impact. The inclusion of her opinion on abortion seems strange to me, as she is known within feminism primarily for her work concerning animal rights. I don't want to make the edits myself because I know her, but I wish someone would add a complete list of her books as well as a more coherent explanation of her theory of the absent referent.Rentstrike (talk) 02:11, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I think that the article needs (a) a more robust development of the concept of 'absent referent' (because 'other persons' are TYPICALLY absent in gossip and other conversations about humans and/or nonhuman persons) and/or (b) a distinct (at least STUB article ABOUT 'absent referent' (which had been moved into the article about Carol Adams at some past time). The topic of abortion and altruism (and the issue of who dies and for what reasons, as in war) is curious because altruists including persons on both sides of controversial moral topics of great import. Passion for altruistic objects can be fueled by the altruism. I don't know what to do about the controversy which seeming altruism and its advocacy (e.g. human rights, animal rights and animal welfare]], environmentalism]], religious freedom, etc.) may actually fuel. Hard to find ANY evidence on the Web of her stand on abortion[edit]

In the RfC for this article, a poster claimed she was antiabortion when they meant the opposite, and more importantly, claimed her Website makes her prochoice stand clear. I checked, and apparently her Web site doesn't discuss it at all. If it does, it's buried, and we can't spend half and hour researching every reference, or gap in reference, that we encounter in editing WP. Maybe the info is in one of her books. If so, find it and cite it. The only content of her Web site that seems like it might contain mentions of her stand on abortion are the six pages of interviews. In the only two or so appearances of the word "choice", she did not disclose her stand on this issue. To top it off, even a Google search of "carol adams" with "prochoice" turns up only 9 hits, none of which provide evidence of her stand. Hurmata (talk) 06:24, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

From her web page: Recently she received awards from The Greater Dallas Coalition for Reproductive Freedom and Planned Parenthood of Dallas and North Texas, "for her help in understanding the psychology of the radical right, for her commitment to women and for her brave stance against the tyranny of Operation Rescue." To add to that point, it's clear from her web-page that she doesn't want to let herself be defined by the abortion issue, so it certainly shouldn't be weighted heavily in the article -- but it doesn't seem that she wants to hide it. Looie496 (talk) 16:56, 28 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Her stance can be found among her many, many published books. In "Neither Man Nor Beast" she devotes a portion to discussing the issue of abortion and how anti-abortion turns women into the absent referent just as meat-eating turns animals into the absent referent. Furthermore, in a book she co-edited called "Animals and Women," there is an article by Gary Francione on abortion which basically holds the same viewpoint. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.218.231.131 (talk) 18:44, 1 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Vegan[edit]

Although Carol Adams uses the term "vegetarian" in at least some of her books, she is vegan. The front page of her website says "Welcome to a feminist-vegan vision for the world." I asked her personally on her Facebook fan page, and she said that when she says "vegetarian" she means "vegan" in all of her books. And, of course, she doesn't just critique meat or killing animals for food in her books, but the whole epistemology behind the exploitation of them. I am not sure whether this can be resolved in the article since she does use the term "vegetarian" rather than "vegan" in her books, which she is most known for. Carol Adams (feminist) → Carol J. Adams — I'd like to move this page to Carol J. Adams, which is currently a redirect. That's the name she uses on her books, and it would avoid the disambiguation in parentheses. I would have to use the tools to move it, so I'm asking here first whether there are any objections.
