There seems to have been a bit of controversy (CONtroversy or conTROVersy?) about the pronunciation of this town's name. As a resident there, I can assure you, gentle readers, that half the population name it to rhyme with 'hassle' and half to rhyme with 'parcel' and we all seem to understand each other. Perhaps there is a 'correct' pronunciation but who cares? You say tomarto and I say tomayto - let's fall in love anyway! This page could do with considerable expansion - I'll have a whack at it, when the present rush is over! Dick 22:54, 17 Jun 2005 (UTC)

That map is pretty bad resolution. Any chance of a clearer one? Gohst 08:54, 28 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It's fairly simple; the people whose ancestors worked in industrial jobs and have lived in the town for over a century pronounce the name with hard 'a'. The trendy blow ins who have arrived in the past half century pronounce the name with a soft 'a'. Basically it's a class difference. Bogong (talk) 13:55, 1 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
