New Idea for the Origin of Catanzaro's Name[edit]

My DNA has been checked and we have been told by experts that my family originates from Catanzaro. We are Jewish. When I read the origin of the name for the town, it seems to me that it might be Hebrew in origin and not named after two generals. Catan (Katan) means "small or little." Zaro in biblical Hebrew means "for his descendants." Putting these two words together creates the word: Katanzaro, "a little for his descendants." It may be we should look at Catanzaro as having been a settlement of Greek Jews who were pushed in to the area during ancient times, because of religious persecution or business.

I am too related to the Catanzaro male Jewish line. Being that this area was the major center for the European silk trade, may be the reason for settlement, too. Upon looking at the top three related groups for my family 1) Cantanzaro, 2) Reggio Calabria and then 3) China....This link might indicate the connection to the silk trade into and out of China.
