Midlands[edit]

I have amended the article as the Midlands and Central Belt are different things. The Midlands of Scotland, and yes the term has pretty much fallen out of use, comprised an area generally a bit further north than the Central Belt. For example, Edinburgh and Glasgow are Central Belt, but were certainly not part of the Midlands.

Broadly, the Midlands (like England, we even had a West and East Midlands!) consisted of the following counties:

West Midlands

Argyll Bute Dunbartonshire Stirlingshire

East Midlands

Clackmannanshire Fife Kinross-shire Perthshire Angus

To back this up, see the Scotland article in the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica (1911encyclopedia.org).

This meant that anything south of the above counties, including the Smaller Central Belt including Edinburgh and Glasgow, was considered to be 'southern'.

P.S. I live in the Central Belt but am originally from the Midlands. ;)

Aberdeen in the Highlands? I can't remember seeing any mountains last time I was there.

Central lowlands/central belt[edit]

Why does this article begin with the statement 'not to be confused with the Central lowlands?' The Central Lowlands and the larger Central Belt cover much the same area- albeit the former is a geological concept, and the latter refers to population and industry. It is not coincidence that the most highly populated part of Scotland (the Central Belt) is in the Central Lowlands- with good farm land, navigable rivers etc. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.131.225.176 (talk) 21:39, 8 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The little "hat" in italics is a standard Wikipedia device to draw the readers attention to the fact that the may be looking at the wrong or an ambiguous article. Given that the various terms in use are similar it may be worth pointing this out in the article more clearly. Ben MacDuiTalk/Walk 08:45, 9 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My kingdom for a map[edit]

It's hard to understand a geographic region without seeing it on a map. Text just doesn't convey what could be learned by seeing this area highlighted on a map of Scotland. Any way to make this happen? 69.125.134.86 (talk) 22:19, 15 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
