In case this goes down, here is the sidebar: " PRISON BY THE NUMBERS 1939 year prison opened 40,000 square feet 400 inmates housed there 2,018 acres of residential development it sits on 1969 year prison closed Source: Newland Communities and Texas Department of Criminal Justice. Sidebar of second Chron story[edit]

The January 20, 2011 Zain Shauk "Prison on the block":

  • "The Central Unit prison in Sugar Land houses slightly more than 1,000 prisoners, but the facility is ripe for closing, budget cutters say."
  • "The unit currently runs the state prison system's soap and detergent factory, a small set of farms, a mechanic shop and freight transportation terminal."
  • "The Central Unit's staff and inmates could be placed in other institutions, officials said, but the loss of 1,060 prison beds would be felt."

School zoning[edit]

Because Central has staff housing..

  • Elem: Cornerstone or Lakeview
  • Mid: Garcia, Sartartia, or Sugar Land
  • High: Austin or Kempner

I'm gonna ask FBISD which schools the staff housing is zoned to. WhisperToMe (talk) 07:25, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

  • Turns out the Smithville units have their own addresses, so based on the FBISD Edulog's school zone locator Smithville is zoned to Lakeview, Sugar Land, and Kempner. I am not sure if the main prison property has other employee housing. WhisperToMe (talk) 13:48, 21 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

BTW "2003-2004 SCHOOL BUS SCHEDULE." (Fort Bend ISD) shows that school buses stopped in front of Smithville. The buses are for Lakeview, Sugar Land MS, and Kempner! And "Central" ("Circle Drive", "Central (Prison)") reveals that the schools for the main portion of the prison are Walker Station (this is the only bus destination for Walker Station ES), Sartartia, and Austin HS. Central Unit Closing[edit]

http://abclocal.go.com/ktrk/story?section=news/local&id=7907796 I just added the announcement that Central Unit will be closing. However, the article will likely need some tweaking here and there to update references to "if" it closes. Alden Loveshade (talk) 01:43, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • It closed - The moment that the state legislature said that its funding would end on September 1, it was doomed. WhisperToMe (talk) 08:26, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Editing needed[edit]

This article is very thorough in following talks, etc. about the prison closing, but now that it has happened, that section needs to be edited and made more succinct. In addition, the article seems to touch on prison development and facilities several times, revisiting this topic for different emphases. It is hard to keep track of the subjects. This material needs to be consolidated better in terms of history and development. Maybe try to show how the related prison facilities were built up - what it was at maximum extent, and then how land was taken away, as well as development around it.Parkwells (talk) 15:36, 13 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
