About photography restriction within the San Juan Chamula village[edit]

- The village of Chamula does not allow photography within its city limits. This is made clear to all travelers and tourists at the entry to the village, and is usually enforced by the local police. This is incorrect. You definitely shouldn’t take pictures inside the church though, as it is seen as deeply disrespectful and would likely get you arrested. –jacobolus (t) 00:36, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've visited the village(ride a horse from San Cristobal de las Casas) and the locals told me that I could take pictures of myself or my colleagues but not of the locals directly. Even the guy that was selling the entrance ticket for the church told us that of course inside the church it's absolutely prohibited but outside of it it is not. Local people believe that taking a picture of them can steal their soul. I agree that no picture that contains individuals has to be uploaded but a picture of the church wouldn't go against the wishes and the beliefs of the residents.

You are correct, there are many photographs of the town square and the outside of the church, and it would be perfectly reasonable to include those on this page. Many individuals would also likely be overjoyed to have images of themselves used in a context like this (just like people from anywhere), but it would be respectful to ask first. Mirrors[edit]

The use of mirrors on the statues inside the church is indeed a way that the locals believe to ward off evil spirits. But it also comes from an old Mayan belief and worship. When Christianity pushed itself upon the people of Chamula, it incorporated a lot of their beliefs to ease the conversion.
