Architect[edit]

I thought the architect of the central railway station was Henry Irwin. Ro —Preceding unsigned comment added by 123.201.59.14 (talk) 03:26, 22 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is some confusion about who designed the building, a government website says original designs were made by George Hardinge and later

additions were made by Robert F. Chisholm.

Probably we should follow the one given in sources from the local Govt... Or otherwise? --Challengethelimits (talk) 02:51, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi friends. I feel this article will look nice if we use templates from [[1]] and [[2]] articles.

Incorrect links however. Here they are: Perth railway station and Bristol Temple Meads railway station. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 13:02, 3 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Dubious[edit]

Heya, the statement Madras Central has been greatly instrumental in earning Chennai the famous sobriquet Gateway to South India seems a bit dubious, I can't seem find a source for it. What should we do? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 12:45, 3 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah! But although it's not a fact, we can't deny the possibility. The words "has been greatly instrumental" takes care of any suspicion I guess. Discussions welcome.--Challengethelimits (talk) 14:11, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It would help greatly but we'd still need a source. I just went thru Highbeam. Couldn't find anything. Anything in the Tamil press? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 14:14, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Will try searching that tonight. Tamil dailies are cluttered with info on train timings, and it's a bit painful to cruise thru them and find what we need. I will do my best. And what about pics? The article clearly lacks quality images --Challengethelimits (talk) 14:20, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Pics, we'll get some. I'm sure we can find some from FlickR and request for it to be relicenced.--Rsrikanth05 (talk) 14:33, 22 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. Just thought of adding a few similar images taken by me last week (including images of a water tank in the station, sign board, and a few stalls within the premises). But only now I understand they'd only degrade the quality of the article. Will try to take a few good panoramas similar to the one in Bristol Temple Meads railway station. Thanks for the timely suggestion, Srikanth. :) Rasnaboy (talk) 04:25, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. We must emulate the best. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 05:30, 8 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Trains List Forking[edit]

How about forking the list of trains? --Anbu121 (talk me) 14:07, 12 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I was waiting for the content to get expanded at least to a few lines before anything is done with the list, since the section initially had only this list. Now, I think it can be forked. Rasnaboy (talk) 15:18, 19 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 10:15, 20 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Here is one I found of the station at night.

Sure. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 18:41, 23 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It'd be good if we could find some panoramas, like the one in Bristol Temple Meads railway station. Rasnaboy (talk) 03:35, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Will try, or will ask some Tamil Wikipedians in Chennai for help. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 10:11, 24 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Main for Suburban[edit]

There is an unsourced line in the lead that says Central is the main hub for suburban lines. How is that? I thought the it was Beach? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 18:46, 26 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A hub is defined as a place where people exchange transport. Central handles two lines - sulurpet and Arakonam. Beach may have higher frequency of trains than central, but according to the definition, both central and beach are hubs because they facilitate exchange between two or more suburban lines. Nonetheless, we need to find source for it. --Anbu121 (talk me) 18:58, 26 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestions for GA[edit]

  • The squad will function round the clock and its personnel have been trained at - change of tense to past is needed  Done
  • Full form of NSG?  Done
  • surveillance cameras have been - have -> had  Done
  • "Following the train accident at the Vyasarpadi Jeeva station, surveillance cameras have been installed at the suburban terminus platforms. A security boundary wall 200 m long has been erected along platform 14 to check unauthorised persons entering the station" - unsourced  Done (The source is meant for all the three successive sentences.)
  • "Two security booths have been planned, one each at the main terminus and the suburban terminus" - planned as of?  Done (Same as above)
  • in the first floor - in -> on  Done
  • "About 120 CCTV cameras are to be installed in Chennai Central." - unsourced and as of?  Done
  • "Government Railway Police (GRP)" - no need to write this two times  Done
  • high-tech - kind of POV. Include "" if source says it  Done (Removed)
  • "and other pop culture in the region" - other regions like?
  • Incidents - make it into a single para. They are too small to exist as 3 independent ones. Same applies to last line in Security because small paras are discouraged in GAs
  • Future - futures would mean after 2012 but there are mentions of 2004 and 07. Little updates are needed in this section
  • Environmental impact has only one ref. No trouble if source covers up the things but additional refs would be great.
  • Be consistent with 2-m or 2m or 2 m - I'd prefer 2 m - same with 250m -> 250 m
  • Yards and sheds - use === === instead of ;  Done
  • Connectivity - many unsourced lines in the 1st para
  • Platforms - many facts require sources
  • Location - completely unsourced
  • History - like above, many facts need ref
  • Small paras - there are many paras that are merely of 1, 2 or 3 lines. Please merge them with other paras as small paras distract users to read and they don't encourage them to read, so not appreciated at GAs (I read somewhere in a Signpost).

Overall, it does need c/e throughout as well as lots of sources. MoS looks okay and no major issues other then lack of refs. Cheers! TheSpecialUser TSU 13:38, 27 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New name[edit]

Look up WP:COMMONNAME. While it is important to keep the new name, since the new name hasn't gained enough popularity (being a recent change), the more popular name "Chennai Central" must be default, and the longer official name in parentheses. Similar to Allahabad (and it's official name Prayagraj). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anonymousboii (talkcontribs) 10:26, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Gained enough popularity is a debatable topic. New nameboards have been effected, even on trains. Please note, you can't compare a railway station to a city. They are different. Pinging @Superfast1111: and @Rasnaboy: here. Also, there is no need to mention longest name (which it isn't) in the lead, or keep it in bold. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 10:33, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also, look at the Mughalsarai Junction railway station or Bandra-Worli Sea Link in Mumbai. Nobody refers to it as the "Rajiv Gandhi Sea Link", which is it's official name, or even Pt. Deendayal Upadhyay for Mughalsarai. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anonymousboii (talkcontribs) 10:47, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have to agree with Srikanth here. Cities and railway stations cannot be clubbed in the same category however we also need to take a look at a similar case involving Mughalsarai Junction which continues to be referred by the same name despite being officially renamed to Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction and my move to rename the article was opposed & reverted. Regarding the station now having the 2nd longest railway station name in the world [3], it is an interesting fact and I do not see any reason why it cannot be mentioned on the article. Awaiting comments of others in order to move towards or as close as possible to a common decision. Superfast1111 (talk) 11:00, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Superfast1111:, @Rasnaboy: Please follow WP:COMMONNAME. The name can be changed to the new one, once it gains enough popularity. My suggestion would be to keep Chennai Central to avoid confusion, similar to Mughalsarai. The longest name trivia can be mentioned, but not in the introduction section as it is against guidelines. Anonymousboii (talk) 11:26, 18 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Move[edit]

Why was this page moved without consensus? Pinging @Rasnaboy:, @Superfast1111:. Same applies for the page on CMBT. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 13:18, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for noticing this, Srikanth. That's part of an ongoing edit war by one User:Haratunder. I've been continuously reverting his/her edits but still the user continue to do unconstructive changes. We need to lock these pages and inform/warn the user. Rasnaboy (talk) 05:46, 24 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
We need to lock this page some more, because people are adding useless information in the infobox, like "Longest name". Also, like I said, follow WP:COMMONNAME, please. Despite how many edits you have, you still don't appear to know the rules. Anonymousboii (talk) 18:54, 22 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Why are you finding fault with me? I did not move the page. Maybe you could have a look at the page history before accusing me of doing anything. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 06:44, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry. I thought you were that other dude who kept violating the template by adding “Longest name in India” in the native_name section. I do agree that convention must be given more importance than politics. That was one of the reasons this station was renamed and the page was moved without consensus. Seems like mob mentality.Anonymousboii (talk) 10:55, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If anything, I was the one removing it from the lede. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 13:38, 23 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Srikanth and @Anonymousboii. Cool! :) Rasnaboy (talk) 05:47, 24 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Apologies for not participating earlier. I feel that we should go with Anonymousboii on this one & retain the name of the article as Chennai Central for some more time. As of now, the intro paragraph looks perfect to me.

"Chennai Central (officially the Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station), formerly known as Madras Central, station code: MAS), is the main railway terminus in the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India."

But we need to lock the page down as it seems there are still editors who are unaware of this discussion & keep trying to move the page. Superfast1111 (talk) 11:18, 24 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 13 June 2019[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: Nominator withdrew the RM; Requested at WP:RM/TR to reverted to Chennai Central railway station instead, with rationale "Undiscussed bold move by User:Haratunder (as per the consensus at Talk:Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station). The older move request has been "withdrawn" and closed. Also as per WP:COMMONNAME.)". The title had already been changed and I have only made a minor grammatical error i.e., actually a spacing error between the initials M and G. There needs to be proper spacing.

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Sai199610 (talk) 07:24, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. Need more reliable source as well as controversial. Official v. Common name v. foo railway station format that was established by VP consensus. Matthew hk (talk) 05:46, 13 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have to fix the RM again. It is called disruptive editing when someone oppose your request at Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests and then you still bold move it. Matthew hk (talk) 05:46, 14 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
For the RM, M.G. and M. G. is purely grammatical . Please prove have space (and dots) is more common in reliable source. Also , as per the MoS established by the Village pump. If the station was commonly known as foo Central, then "Railway Station" suffix should be lower cap instead. Grand Central Terminal is counter-example as the long name "Grand Central Terminal" is a whole common name. I doubt the common name of the station had that long name of the person BTW. Matthew hk (talk) 05:53, 14 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Which a citation on this wiki article, from Times of India ([4]), use

Following clearances from the Centre, Tamil Nadu government on Friday renamed Chennai railway station as Puratchi Thalaivar Dr M G Ramachandran Central Railway Station. "The name of Chennai Central Railway Station situated in Chennai, Chennai district, Tamil Nadu, shall be changed as per the following schedule, from the date of issuance of this notification," chief secretary Girija Vaidyanathan said in her order

Which it seem against the nominator's proposal. Matthew hk (talk) 06:45, 14 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think its time to conclude our discussion because already this article is named correctly as the name in TAMIL NADU GOVERNMENT GAZETTE which is officially released by Tamil Nadu Government on 5 April 2019. In that gazette it is spelt using the name of Puratchi Thalaivar Dr. M.G. Ramachandran Central Railway Station (as the name which is now projecting in our article) for reference you may ([5]), see this link for gazette image. Haranari (talk) 13:04 , 14 June 2019 (UTC)
Re: Haranari. According to WP:Article titles, there is a few criteria. Usually we use WP:Common name instead of WP:official name. And this wiki article exactly have a citation to say the official name may confuse to other people, ([6]) proving it is not a common name. Matthew hk (talk) 07:25, 15 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Re: Matthew hk. Yeah I understood what you conveyed and I agree with your statement. Haranari (talk) 14:24 , 17 June 2019 (UTC)
  • Oppose. Agree with Matthew hk. We normally follow WP:Common name, which need not be official name always. The reason why I kept reverting the changes made without any consensus. Rasnaboy (talk) 13:10, 15 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]
