adult[edit]

"Though the comic is largely targeted at an adult audience, it does garner critial merit for occasional political commentary." Using "adult" as an euphemism for "erotic" or "pornographic" makes this sentence sound like only children are interested in political commentary. move this article to new name[edit]

This article needs to be renamed to Cherry (adult comic book character) or Cherry Popstar or something like that. Cherry Poptart was just used for two issues out of a large number of them and fails the rule that article titles are named after the most well known version of the name. 172.146.210.38 07:49, 9 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The "Cherry Popstar" stuff is bogus. That name was used in a single story in issue #13 where she actually portrayed a pop star. If you look at all other stories, even in that same issue, it is just Cherry, as on the cover. Except in that one story, no one has ever called her Cherry Popstar. That's utter nonsense. Any time her last name was used in the comics after the threatened lawsuits it was always "Popstar." The claim that it was only in #13 and for when she was acting as a rock star is false. There's also issue #7 where she held her own convention and had people dress up like her for a look a like contest and also others I don't have anymore. If you are trying to write an encyclopedia based upon what you can turn up on your own Google serach instead of actual first hand knowledge about the topic then you really shouldn't be editing other people's work. 216.165.158.7 07:05, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also in #9 when she goes to see a guidance counsellor and the counsellor calls her "Ms. Popstar"... And I can recall another instance as well but am having trouble finding it... I am just reading #10, published in 1990 (1st edition) and it's "Poptart" there (pages 2 and 3). Also in "Cherry's Jubilee" from 1992 it's "Poptart" (page 31), so all the "popstar" thing doesn't make any sense. -- Gabi S. (talk) 07:55, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Are you reading the actual issues or possibly edited online copies that are traded by pirates? Perhaps some filesharer, who aren't known for respecting trademark laws etc., decided to modify it in their version? I have the actual printed issues, bought them back in the 80's-90's. The cover of the 1992 issue shows a handwritten note with "Larry Welz (c) 1992" on the floor. I don't know, maybe reprints from later years were changed from "poptart" to "popstar" but I find it hard to believe. -- Gabi S. (talk) 06:59, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I find the claim that it was Popstar after the title was changed for legal reasons hard to believe, especially after having seen the collections use Popstar over and over. The google search is not irrelevant. It shows which name is used by the public, i.e. the name she is known by. I got 17K hits for "cherry poptart", compared to 14 for "cherry popstar", several of which were derived from this wikipedia article. Not 14K refs for "popstar", 14 total. 3 alleged references don't matter a great deal. I went through several issues (I have the first 20, though I am having trouble locating all of them) and did not find scenes where she was called anything other than "Cherry", even by prison guards and such.

At the very least, the article should state that "cherry poptart" is still used by the public, which is not bound by legalities. Discussion boards all over the internet refer to her by the original name. Waynesewell 13:44, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

She has never been known as 'Popstar'. I have SirReal's entire collection of all three different titles, main, Cherry Deluxe, and Cherry's Jubilee, and she's always called Cherry POPTART. The title of the book was changed, but not the character. DarkAudit 04:01, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On his official site, Welz calls her "Cherry Poptart". ([1], in the welcome message) "Popstar" is an unwanted legal artifact, similar to a disclaimer, and everyone, including Welz, calls her "Poptart".

New issues[edit]

Does anyone know if Welz is going to produce any more of these comix? I'm sure a lot of people reading this wikipedia article do so to find out. I asked him, but he never emailed me back. I hope he's not dead! --TechnoFaye Kane 19:11, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It's now 2014 and there hasn't been a new issue published since 2000. Maybe it's time to stop referring to this as an "ongoing series".

more bad info[edit]

The article also used to link to cherrycomics.com claiming it was the site of the artist... this is false. It's just a fan site by someone completely unaffiliated with the artist or publisher, and someone cybersquatting on the name. Perhaps, perhaps not. The "proof" you show lists as the 'true' web site one that is non-public. Note that the 'bogus' site nevertheless lists "�1996 Larry & Sharon Welz", and there is no false material on it. Most likely it was the real site at one time and someone snatched the expired registration. I'll add a note that it exists but isn't the real site. Inappropriate tone[edit]

I've edited the article to remove references to specific sex acts, and as a result also removed the 'Inappropriate Tone' flag. (I do wish whoever flags these things does what they say and posts the reasons for the flags on this page. But they rarely do.)
