Improving References[edit]

The article could use additional references and/or photos other than those from one specific brand of commercial pies. It may be inescapable that Pukka brand pies are widespread in the UK, but there must be those who make the pies themselves, rather than purchasing ready-made versions. "most popular"[edit]

My issues with using The Sun as a reference for the apparent chart-topping popularity of the chicken & mushroom pie go deeper than just the general unreliability of that particular tabloid. The link goes to an old article on The Sun's website which is annotated "Last Updated: 27th July 2007." But that report was actually published on page 35 of the The Sun on 29 January 2004. It was also based on a very small, uncontrolled - and thus not at all representative for the purposes of an encyclopedia - poll carried out by Kwik Save. There have been similar unscientific polls most years - for example, in 2001 steak & kidney was apparently the most popular (Brown, Annie (12 May 2001). "Pie study just half-baked". Daily Record. Glasgow. p. 28.); in 2002 Leeds was the pie-eating capital, and steak & kidney the favourite again ("Leeds tops for pies". The Belfast News Letter. Belfast. 24 August 2002. p. 9.). In 2010, chicken & mushroom takes a dive and the Evening Telegraph informs us that plain steak pie tops the chart, followed by steak & kidney, minced beef & onion and finally chicken & mushroom (Jackson, David (26 January 2010). "Comeback for the humble British pie". Evening Telegraph. Kettering.). Oh, and based on sales, Tesco reckoned Leicester was the pie-eating capital... So the reference is 9 years old, unreliable due to the nature of the evidence gathering and probably unreliable due to the variation seen year by year anyway.
