I was suprised not to see anything about the heroin theory, so I have added this. Also removed the line "and most people identify him with this song.". This is absolutely incorrect. Bowie has had dozens of major hits - it would be impossible to speculate which one(s) that most people identify him with. In fact, I would say he is associated with several major hits, not just one.

Unlike 'Ashes to Ashes' which is clearly about heroin, the grandiose lyrics of China Girl are quite ambiguous, perhaps a result of cut-and-paste style writing. http://www.guitarnoise.com/article.php?id=132

'China White' would be an unlikely name for brown heroin, unless ironic. In fact, it is a name for Fentanyl.
