Potential

Of all the nations participating in this year's Games, China is poised to make the biggest splash. This country certainly has branched out from its "specialties" in Table Tennis and Diving to become a contender in many of the Olympic events this year. Given "home court" advantage they look to take away the medal count lead from the United States. I look forward to seeing how this article developes as the Games progress. Name of article

Shouldn't the name of this article be People's Republic of China at the 2008 Summer Olympics? -- K. Annoyomous 24 _{GO LAKERS! Please reply on my talk page. Thanks.} 07:32, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

That's because it's the decision of the olympic community to allow the Chinese mainland to participate as China. This has been the case at the Summer Olympics since 1984. The Observant (talk) 15:13, 12 August 2008 (UTC)

Daily medal list

I think I am against the idea of setting up a daily list for number of medals. There would be small long term notability for knowing which day medals are won after years. And also other countries do not have such a list on their pages. – PeterCX&Talk 15:46, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

Strongly agree. Per Wikipedia:Recentism, this information does not add to the long-term historical perspective of this encyclopedia. Also, we have no consensus for this format in WP:WikiProject Olympics, and none of the other ~3200 articles of this type contain this type of table. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 20:59, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

There is a direct linkage with the lists of medalists. Since the medalist are arranged chronologically one can simply refer to the daily medal haul and infer what day each medal was won. I think it adds valuable information in the long run. 70.24.143.172 (talk) 14:06, 14 August 2008 (UTC)

Media coverage

Just a quick note, you can tell whether a CCTV channel broadcasts the Olympics or not by where the logo is - if it is in the top right hand corner, it does, if it is in the top left hand corner, it doesn't. By default, CCTV channels have their logo in the top-left, however Olympic broadcasts place the score in the top-left corner, so broadcast channels thus temporarily have to change sides. ROC and Hong Kong

If China on Wikipedia links to the wider Chinese region, including these areas, then shouldn't there be a hatnote at the top i.e.

This hatnote has similarities to that of the one at the top of the China article. I realize that the PRC retains the China name in Olympic competition, and that the naming of this article is no doubt correct, but there is an ambiguity, and both the PRC and ROC claim legitimacy of the name. If it's the Wikipedia policy to acknowledge that ambiguity and remain neutral (by linking China to an article on the wider area), then this page should reflect that. I don't if anyone objects, but this hasn't been done before, so I'm trying to justify it. Yohan euan o4 (talk) 14:12, 17 August 2008 (UTC)

Regardless of what the ROC claims, who will go looking for Taiwan's participation on the China page? It is enough to make sure that "Taiwan at the 2008 Summer Olympics" redirects to "Chinese Taipei at the 2008 Summer Olympics" because people looking for information will be looking under the well-known name "Taiwan", not the name "China" which is only used in narrow diplomatic circles. Weightlifting

Why did China win 8 goldmedails in weightlifting and USA did not win any goldmedail ? Germany won also only one medail with Matthias Steiner. Is therefore a reason ? 212.95.118.14 (talk) 00:13, 20 August 2008 (UTC)

What the f***?

Why isn't there a corruption section? China is cheating in the Olympics. They need to be taken care of! Right now! How come there isn't a section on those kids who are like 11 and participating in the Gymnastics section. I agree, it should be added to Concerns over the 2008 Summer Olympics. This is a legitimate issue for Wikipedia because there has been significant media coverage of the age discrepancies and unusual judging for female gymnastics. Cwenger (talk) 00:21, 19 August 2008 (UTC)

They are reserve players, not official players.
TOURNAMENT REGULATIONS "Each of the players of the three top-ranked teams who feature on a Match Report Forms shall receive a medal". They did not feature on any Match Report Forms.

ROC appearances were "related"?

The subject is "China" at the Olympics, not "PRC" at the Olympics. Why does the info box treat the pre-1949 ROC appearances as just "related" appearance rather than putting them on par with the later appearances under the PRC? Readin (talk) 18:22, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

Agreed. This article should also list pre-1949 appearances of China. There's no reason why they should be listed as "related appearances." Booble2004 (talk) 05:21, 9 August 2008 (UTC)
Disagree. Readin's commentary is underpinned by his agreement to the PRC's view that it is the sole legitimate successor government of China, and that the ROC no longer exists. As long as there remains two claimants to being the legitimate government of China, wikipedia cannot display information which supports the assertions of one party over the other, all the more when it is on topics other than politics.--Huaiwei (talk) 03:29, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Legitimacy has nothing to do with it. Obviously the PRC does not enjoy the legitimacy of having been elected by the people. But it clearly does govern China as "China" has become synonymous with PRC. Readin (talk) 06:40, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

Disagree for non-political reasons. When I created these infoboxes, the idea was that they are organized by National Olympic Committee. In this case, the delgation sent by the Chinese Olympic Committee (code: CHN) is what is described in the main Olympic history section. However, the addition of the ROC teams from 1932–1948 in the "Other related appearances" section is supposed to indicate that mainland China was represented at the Olympic Games prior to 1980, albeit under a different NOC. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 20:59, 11 August 2008 (UTC)
