Apostrophe in island's name[edit]

Great to see this island's page spring up. I'm wondering about the name, and the lack of apostrophe. Is this a matter worth forwarding to the Geographical Names Unit? Seems to me the name ought to be spelled Chinaman's Hat Island. It does resemble a single hat, belonging to a single man. Danimations (talk) 14:41, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Australian placenames with possessives are all written without apostrophes. - Shiftchange (talk) 21:55, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Danimations, I would agree with Shiftchange. When one looks at the place name websites such as Geoscience Australia's Gazetteer of Australia Place Name Search & SA Government's PlaceNames Online Search, the island name is shown as Chinamans Hat Island without the apostrophe.Cowdy001 (talk) 22:04, 3 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You’re worried about an apostrophe when the name is blatantly racist? Kotterdale2 (talk) 21:42, 1 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
