Official name[edit]

Formal name of this building according to its offical web-site is "Capital City": [1] (see also here [2]). "City of capitals" is a literal rendering of the Russian name "Gorod Stolic" but I guess we should use formal names of buldings, even if they differ from the correct translations of their names in local languages --Himalajski (talk) 21:12, 28 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Entirely agree. "City of Capitals" jars as a name. Shall I rename the page? Longwayround (talk) 15:54, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

City of CapitalsCapital City Moscow TowerRelisted. Vegaswikian (talk) 20:03, 16 December 2011 (UTC) The official name of the building is Capital City. Literal translation is frequently not correct translation. Longwayround (talk) 16:03, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • REname but to Capital City (Moscow tower), since "Moscow tower" is a disambiguator. Capital city will need a hatnote for this. The lead also needs altering so tha the official English name comes first and the literal transalation follows the Russian name. Peterkingiron (talk) 18:10, 9 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • The Russian name Город Столиц means "town of capital cities": город (nominative/accusative) = "town", столиц (genitive plural of столица) = "of capital cities". Likely some Russian publicity man's knowledge of English was imperfect. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 09:44, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
    • I entirely agree with you, Anthony, re the literal meaning of the name. That, however, is not really the question. My understanding is that WP:COMMONNAME should be preferred to WP:OFFICIALNAMES so we ought to be considering which is the more common name. Longwayround (talk) 12:42, 10 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move to Capital City (tower), unless "Moscow" is needed to disambiguate from another tower called Capital City. If that is what they call the tower in English, that's what we should use regardless of what the literal translation of the Russian name is. Also, questioning the English knowledge of the person who came up with the English name is hardly appropriate, especially since translation of names is by no means always done literally word-by-word. Some things simply sound better in different languages in slightly different variations. Jafeluv (talk) 23:27, 19 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
