Re-creating article[edit]

The original article was speed deleted because of copyright infringements. The adm who deleted the previous version of this article user:Kurt Shaped Box was consulted before re-creating it from scratch, as he recommended (see User talk:Kurt Shaped Box). For the time being, this is a STUB from the article in Wiki Spanish (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clodomiro_Picado_Twight), feel free to colaborate in the translation (the complete Sp text is hidden) or to make new contributions, several refs are already included.   • Biografía

Por sus excelentes calificaciones fue becado por el Estado para estudiar en Francia, donde realizó estudios en la Universidad de La Sorbona, obteniendo en 1909 el diploma de estudios superiores en Zoología. En 1910 regresó a Costa Rica, pero posteriormente continua con sus estudios, graduándose en 1913 como Doctor en Ciencias de la Universidad de París. Ese mismo año fue admitido en el Instituto Pasteur de París y en el Instituto Colonial de esa ciudad.[1]

El 16 de mayo de 1944, después de una penosa dolencia, en su casa de habitación, falleció el Dr. Picado. Sus funerales fueron una manifestación de duelo nacional en Costa Rica. El Dr. Picado fue declarado Benemérito de la Patria por el Congreso costarricense, mediante decreto No. 34 de 21 de diciembre de 1943.[1]

  • Investigaciones y descrubrimientos==

La labor científica del Dr. Picado fue prolífica y muy amplia, se calcula que escribió unos 115 trabajos entre los que se incluyen libros y monografías. Por ejemplo, realizó estudios zoológicos de los animales en las bromeliáceas, sobre serpientes (ofidismo), en la fisiología y fitopatología vegetal y la microbiología industrial, en la microbiología médica, y en el campo de la inmunología.

En marzo de 2000, médicos del hospital San Juan de Dios de San José (Costa Rica) publicaron sus manuscritos, que explican las experiencias de él entre 1915 y 1927 acerca de la acción inhibitoria de los hongos del género "Penicillium sp" en el crecimiento de estafilococos y estreptococos (bacterias causantes de una serie de infecciones),[2] motivo por el cual es reconocido como uno de los precursores del antibiótico penicilina, descubierta por Fleming en 1928. El informe con los resultados de los tratamientos realizados con la penicilina por el Dr. Picado fueron publicados por la Sociedad de Biología de París en 1927.[2]

Furthermore, in March 2000, doctors of the San Juan de Dios Hospital in San Jose (Costa Rica) published manuscripts belonging to the Costa Rican scientist and medical doctor Clodomiro (Clorito) Picado Twight (1887-1944). The manuscripts explained Picado's experiences between 1915 and 1927 about the inhibitory actions of the fungi of genera Penic. Clorito Picado had reported his discovery to the Paris Academy of Sciences in Paris, yet did not patent it, even though his investigation had started years before Fleming's.

Como un homenaje a sus méritos y en agradecimiento por su arduo trabajo en la obra Biología Hematológica Elemental Comparada, la Universidad de Costa Rica le entregó el Doctorado Honoris Causa en 1942.[3]

También en homenaje a su memoria y a su destacada trayectoria científica, desde 1977 el Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología (MICIT) y el Ministerio de Cultura, Juventud y Deportes (MCJD) de Costa Rica, otorgaron el Premio Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología "Clodomiro Picado Twight", como estímulo y reconocimiento de la labor científica y tecnológica de los ciudadanos costarricenses. El premio fue modificado en junio del 2000, dividiéndose a partir del siguiente año en dos categorías: [3] el Premio Nacional de Ciencia "Clodomiro Picado Twight" y el Premio Nacional de Tecnología "Clodomiro Picado Twight", los cuales también se otorgan anualmente. Los ganadores se hacen acreedores de una estatuilla conmemorativa con el busto del Dr. Picado, un pergamino y un premio en efectivo.

Además, en reconocimiento al trabajo pionero del Dr. Picado en la investigación sobre serpientes y venenos, la institución médica especializada en realizar estas tareas lleva su nombre. El Instituto de Investigación Clodomiro Picado fue fundado en 1970 y se localiza en Dulce Nombre de Coronado, San José. El instituto es una unidad de investigación de la Universidad de Costa Rica, responsable por el Programa de Sueros Antiofídicos, que incluye la producción de suero antiofídico polivalente, la investigación científica sobre las serpientes y sus venenos, la divulgación y la extensión en zonas rurales y centros de atención hospitalaria.

Nombrados en honor al Dr. Picado:

  • El centro de enseñanza pública secundaria del barrio Las Américas, en la ciudad de Turrialba, Cartago, fue bautizado como Colegio Clodomiro Picado Twight (también es conocido como I.E.T).
  • Clínica Clodomiro Picado de la CCSS en Cinco Esquinas de Tibás

Citizenship[edit]

Born in Nicaragua, Dr. Picado was a Costa Rican citizen. See CRC's Political Constitution Art. 13, item 2:

2) El hijo de padre o madre costarricense por nacimiento, que nazca en el extranjero, y se inscriba como tal en el Registro Civil, por la voluntad del progenitor costarricense, mientras sea menor de edad, o por la propia hasta cumplir veinticinco años;....
