Especially given the thin evidence presented. It may be an American leader but it barely rates a mention in European mining circles.

  • In petoleum companies in the middle east (those are the largest in the world, hopefully that doesn't violate the peacock terms policy in your POV) such as Aramco as well as other top petroleum exploration and services companies in the world (such as Halliburton, Schlumberger, and WesternGeco), School of Mines is indeed highly recognized.   • I second Eagleamn's comments. Within the petrol community, CSM is internationally renowned. Whether or not that merits a mention in this article remains to be seen, but I wouldn't necessarily consider it a biased POV. If you're in the petrol engineering world it's a known fact that CSM is among the top educational institutions within the geoscience discipline --TheSunTheSea
  • Agreed, but regardless of the actual status, the current citation looks really sketchy. A pamphlet about precious gems should not have the authority to determine anything about the world class status of a college. ChunyangD (talk) 07:49, 31 January 2013 (UTC)

Rivalry

Hey do CSM still have a big rivalry with New Mexico Tech in Socorro? There was a time when it was as big a rivalry as you get for tech schools, with reciprocal pranks and good-natured but spirited competition between the schools. I've been out of the loop for a while, and didn't know if it's still a big deal or not. --ABQCat 05:52, 2 Dec 2004 (UTC)

As a freshman finishing my first semester at Mines I was unaware of such rivalry. While we completed the M climb, and learned the school song, we yell the M-I-N-E-S part towards Boulder; but I would not call them a rival. --MattMMatt 20:43, 5 Dec 2004 (UTC)

It must have been an older rivalry since I was never aware of it. I attended CSM from 2000-2004 and I don't remember having a rivalry with New Mexico Tech. Of course, CSM has never really been famous for athletics (although the football team did excellent this year). -- TheSunTheSea 22:04, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)

New Mexico Tech doesn't really have a lot in the way of athletics, either, but the rivalry tended to be more along the lines of pranks and other competitions. I think either rugby or soccer were the sport of choice between the two schools, but I don't know for sure. It's curious that the rivalry would disappear - I guess that could be the result of turnover with small student bodies or something. Interesting, in any event. --ABQCat 22:53, 7 Dec 2004 (UTC)
I heard that "recently" (don't know the exact date), a group of Tech students came to Mines and put a large cloth "N" and "T" on either side of the "M", thus spelling out "NMT". However, I also heard that few if any Mines students noticed, or if they did, they had no idea what it meant. An interesting rivalry was that between Mines and the U. of Denver in the early 20th century. At one point, Mines students were setting off dynamite charges on the DU campus. In the Spring of 1991, a group of Mines students placed cloth banners spelling 'CSM' across the outside of Macey Center on the New Mexico Tech Campus. This was a direct response to Techies having dumped 1200lbs of lime onto Mount Zion to spell 'NMT'; unfortunately for the Miners, New Mexico Tech's 'M' is inaccessible, it is in an explosives research compound often featured on Myth Busters. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.166.207.190 (talk) 18:16, 11 May 2012 (UTC)

I attended CSM from 2005 - 2010 and I am aware that CSM has a "rivalry" but it was never explicitly mentioned. As far as campus anger was concerned, Mines students hold more contempt for CU Boulder than anywhere else, and I note what MattMMatt says above with the fist-shaking towards Boulder in the fight song. Sports

Should a section be added for sports at the school? Even though sports are not huge at CSM the school does compete and there are interesting facts, like having one of the oldest stadiums in the country that would be informative.-PMD- --PMurphyD 22:42, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Blaster Mule or Burro

Every few weeks someone decides to change the status of blaster from Mule to Burro or back again. This debate is not new and is even debated on the mines Alumni Site here. The facts as I understand them, stand thus:

  • The animal current used to represent Blaster is a Burro
  • The original Blaster was probably a Burro (Mules were used in teams for hauling)

For the record, I can't find any sources that list Blaster as a mule and a few that list him as a burro, and as such the Listing of the Mascot as a Burro should stand. Adam McCormick (talk) 16:33, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

Mountain monogram

Is there an image available for the school's mountain monogram? If it is notable enough to mention in the article as it is, a picture of it would be particularly useful. -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 17:00, 29 July 2011 (UTC) The school also maintains one of the oldest mountain monograms

The language used in the part about people's heads getting shaved and branded with silver nitrate hardly sounds neutral.

Motto

Someone humorously changed the motto to "domine mi, ne moriar" which means "please do not die" (in reference to the difficulty of the school). It went unnoticed for 6 months. The proper motto, which can be seen on the seal, is "Nil sine numine" (nothing without providence). Now there's an edit war over it. 138.67.69.156 (talk) 04:38, 27 April 2016 (UTC)

What really goes under "Early History"?

The "Early History" section seems a bit poorly written, and even includes gems like this:

"The Division of Liberal Arts and International Studies and the Department of Physical Education and Athletics provide nontechnical educational opportunities for Mines students. Other facilities include: Ben Parker Student Center, Arthur Lakes Library, Green Center and the Edgar Mine which is located in Idaho Springs."

Is this really Early History, or does it tell about what is at the school now? Memfrob (talk) 05:45, 1 February 2017 (UTC)

Someone should fix the Academics section since the restructuring of the departments.

Restructuring of page

Hello Wikipedians,

I am a current Mines student who is utterly appalled at the lack of clarity, organization, references, and information on this Wikipedia page. I am currently undergoing to the slow process of revising the entire page. For instance, I plan to remove the out-of-place lists (e.g. Presidents) and rambling sections (Early History). For everything that I take out, I hope to add a section of well-written, informative material that does not rely solely on lists and peacock terms to convey information. I doubt anyone is spending a lot of time in this talk page, but if you are, feel free to hit me up with suggestions of sections that could go on this page. I am happy to write (or at least attempt to write) any section you think would fit well. I will be frequently editing this page, with mostly minor edits until I get going on this little project.
