Anybody know how often the CID used to meet? Annual? Twice a year? I've just come across a comment by General Henry Wilson on 14 July 1914 (i.e. before it was clear that there would be a European War, let alone that Britain would be involved in it) that hopefully it would be the last CID meeting with the Liberals in power (a General Election was expected that autumn, which for obvious reasons never took place).Paulturtle (talk) 12:18, 4 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Elgin or Esher Committee[edit]

Originally, the text stated CID was established following the recommendations of the Elgin Committee (1902). Later it was changed (by an anonymous) to Esher Committee (1904). I am leaving Esher, though the reference vaguely mentions Elgin.

Book The Imperial Army Project: Britain and the Land Forces of the Dominions and India, 1902-1945 would probably give the correct answer, but I do not have access to it. Pavel Vozenilek (talk) 12:13, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Technically both are wrong. The inception was apparently a November 1902 memorandum by St John Brodrick, Secretary of State for War, and Lord Selborne. The first meeting of the new Defence Committee was in December 1902. The Elgin Commission didn't report until July 1903 and the Esher Committee's first report was in January 1904. Authors such as Franklyn Johnson (Defence by Committee), Nicholas d'Ombrain (War Machinery and High Policy) and G. C. Peden (Arms, Economics and British Strategy) put 1902 as the foundation date of the C.I.D., even though it didn't get a secretariat until May 1904 (largely as a result of the Esher Committee). —Simon Harley (Talk). 17:05, 20 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
