Main claim to media fame[edit]

It's fairly ridiculous that this article doesn't mention what he's actually received the most news coverage for -- his notorious "Red Swastika" remark... AnonMoos (talk) 11:37, 1 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Symbol proposal[edit]

By the way, I'm fairly certain that Sommaruga didn't actually propose the "Red Crystal" in 1992 -- for a number of years, the proposal was actually for a "Red Diamond" (solid red, like in playing cards), and the hollow "Red Crystal" variant didn't publicly emerge until relatively soon before the new symbol was adopted. In any case, a large number of Israelis and Jews don't regard the adoption of the Red Crystal as any kind of "achievement", but actually as confirming and entrenching the two-tier system whereby the Red Cross in effect (despite superficial verbal protestations to the contray) recognizes Christianity and Islam as real religions, while denigrating Judaism to a second-class status as not a real religion. Your point is now included, based on the detailed history of the adoption of the red crystal publised in 2007 by François Bugnion [1]. As reported in detail by this source, it is the result of a protracted 15-year negociation involving the Israeli government, the Swiss government and many other stakeholders. The risk which had to be addressed was to have a proliferation of symbols (each major religion or human group could have claimed one) and an important loss of effectiveness of these symbols if opposing parties were to use different symbols on the battlefield.Pensées de Pascal (talk) 10:29, 17 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Well, before 1948 it seemed that it was anything goes (i.e. no reticence in allowing the Red-Lion-and-Sun etc.), but as soon as the Red Star of David was proposed, then all of a sudden things somehow abruptly got much more restrictive... AnonMoos (talk) 23:28, 19 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
