Corruption in the colombian justice system during the 1980s[edit]

Some sources claim that the justice system was too corrupted and terrorized during the early 1980s. This sounds like a good explanation for the impact caused by the extradition law proposed by Betancur at the time (criminals knew back then that colombian justice was incapable of keeping them behind bars). Do you think we should mention any of this in the article? --Forich (talk) 19:10, 17 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Luz E. Nagle wrote in 1991 a paper ("The rule of law or the rule of fear: Some thought on colombian extradition") saying this: "Violence, crime, intimidation, and corruption in Colombia have forced citizens, judges and politicians to adopt a tenuous position of enforcing the extradition treaty between the United States and Colombia" and "Cases are shelved for years by corrupt court officials paid to keep them from going to trial". Suggestions for Improvement[edit]

Dear fellow wikipedias, I have some general suggestions to make for improving the quality and scope of this important topic and article. First, a lot more research can be done in scholarly articles to add citations to many statements that are missing them. This is also important to ensure the neutrality of the article which after all is Encyclopedic and not argumentative. I think adding a section, at the beginning, on the colonial history of Colombia and how that shaped the political culture and corruption the country experiences today can be useful. Other sections could also be added like - attempts at reform to lower levels of corruption, - cases of conviction of corrupt actors (justice) and/or cases of injustice (lack of judicial legitimacy) and a section on how corruption directly impacts the population at large in their everyday lives, and linking it to inequality and poverty. Further, a lot of emphasis is placed on the armed conflict for being directly related to the prevalence of corruption. However, this seems a bit Biased and is not properly backed by credible sources.
