Clean up[edit]

What began as a clean up changed to removing most of the content. I did this because, in my opinion, this article needed to be stripped down and rewrote.

Except that you spelled the name of the magazine wrong - it's CosmoGIRL! not COSMOgirl! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 198.185.164.128 (talkcontribs)
Not really! Have a look at the cover of the magazine...

Agreed on the magazine logo, but look at their website. In the text on their FAQ pages it's reversed.

Well I did look at it and yes indeed, it is written as cosmoGIRL in that one place, however it is written all over the website as COSMOgirl...I think the magazine cover itself is a better source...

A note[edit]

A wikipedia user was thoughtful enough to email the editor from the cosmogirl website to settle the discussion about the naming convention of the magazine title. The editor from Cosmogirl has contacted me about correcting the title of the article, so I thought I'd post here to save confusion :). The following is copied from my talk page.

First post:

Hi,

I received an email from a user (I'm guessing it's Nixie77 considering the post above this one) regarding the official name on the site. I'm the senior online editor at CosmoGIRL! magazine and I wanted to let you know that, while you make a very good point, when the title of the magazine is in print the GIRL! is capitalized and not the Cosmo.

Here's our corporate page regarding the magazine:

http://hearst.com/magazines/property/mag_prop_cosmogirl.html

As you can see, the spelling is consisent there. If you need more proof let me know. I can even forward you an e-mail from work account, the spelling is in my signature file. I would just rather not publish my work e-mail out there for the whole web to send me spam.  ;)

You can leave a message through the website.

Thank you.

Second post:

I am actually not sure what the "official" reason is, but if I had to guess I'd say it's because we are an off-shoot of Cosmopolitan magazine. When they shorten that mag's name it's Cosmo, not COSMO so I guess they wanted some consistency there. The reason it's on the cover capitalized is that it's a vanity spelling (check out the Cosmo logo which is spelled in all caps) so new readers will identify the connection between the two brands.

As a side note, I'd just like to mention how great this is because it shows how people can work together properly. :-)

Requested move[edit]

Wikipedia content is not controlled by external organizations or possible representatives of them. Wikipedia:Manual of Style (trademarks)#General rules says:

  • Follow standard English text formatting and capitalization rules even if the trademark owner encourages special treatment:
    • avoid: REALTOR®
    • instead, use: Realtor
    • but, don't invent new formats: MCI is standard English, while "Mci" is essentially never used.

...

  • Trademarks in CamelCase are a judgement call. CamelCase may be used where it reflects general usage and makes the trademark more readable:
    • OxyContin or Oxycontin — editor's choice

I'm not sure "CosmoGIRL" or whatever is a registered trademark but I think the quoted guideline also applies if it isn't. Writing a common word like "GIRL" in all capitals is obviously not standard English. Their website front page http://www.cosmogirl.com/ uses 4 variants: COSMOgirl, COSMOGIRL, CosmoGIRL, Cosmogirl. The only of these which satisfies our guideline is Cosmogirl. A Google search shows both "Cosmogirl" and the CamelCase "CosmoGirl" (which is also within our guideline and is the window title at http://www.cosmogirl.com/currentissue/) are used in practice. I suggest we use one of them. PrimeHunter 23:57, 25 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I agree, CosmoGIRL should be renamed : Cosmogirl seems like the best option, lets move this article. --$user log (talk) 02:17, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Article title revisited[edit]

Since we seem to have used CosmoGirl consistently throughout the article, should we also move the article to that title? —C.Fred (talk) 13:20, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cover image[edit]

Given the choice between the Hudgens cover and Tisdale cover, the Hudgens cover works better for this article. The problem with the Tisdale cover is that the "girl!" part of the logo is in a shade of yellow that is close enough to Tisdale's hair that there is poor contrast. The Hudgens cover, by contrast, has that text in red, so it is easier to read—and therefore a more useful image to illustrate the logo, an integral part of the cover of the magazine. —C.Fred (talk) 15:39, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The most significant cover would probably be either the first issue, or the last issue. In the last issue the title is red with good contrast. Gimmetrow 17:07, 8 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
