Wondering about notability[edit]

This page seems disproportionately long to me, speaking as someone who doesn't know anything about Brazilian jiu jitsu but who does read Portuguese. Since the topic is a term used in Brazil, naturally I looked it up on pt.wikipedia.org, but it is not there at all. I would like to see some experts weigh on this. —giso6150 (talk) 23:35, 8 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I really do appreciate the critical review, giso6150. Clearly, I must defer to you as the expert in Portuguese, as my knowledge and abilities regarding such is admittedly very limited. I've (sadly) never been to Brazil and have no idea how often this term is currently used in BJJ culture down there, but I have had a fair amount of exposure to north American BJJ culture, up and down the west cost, and can anecdotally say that the term does make an appearance here. That said, this article was fully intended to be brief and stubby, reflective of the limited citations available. At the time of moving it to articlespace, I didn't perceive it as any more overreaching than other martial arts term stub type articles (e.g. Ippon, Underhook, Hachiji dachi, etc.). It's entirely possible I can't see the forest for the trees however. Are there some aspects of this article you think I should revise or perhaps eliminate? I'm very much interested in restoring the article to any balance it may currently lack. Buddy23Lee (talk) 08:36, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This is definitely beyond my own area of expertise and I will leave it for editors who know more about the subject to make any more specific instructions or suggestions. Structurally, and in terms of citations, you (Buddy23Lee) should be proud of the article. I think it is well supported and written well. Ideally, a Portuguese speaker from the BJJ community could add some context to the Portuguese article. The lack of mention over there is what grabbed my attention, after all. —giso6150 (talk) 13:53, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, that does mean a lot coming from an editor with your stature and contributions. In terms of further review, I can at least say that the MA/MMA project people here tend to have a pretty critical eye, so I’m certain it’ll get at least a once over from many of them. Starting out, I actually did try to see if there was a Portuguese wiki article specifically addressing the term, but it would seem that many non-English wiki’s redirect it back to Creon, the Greco-roman figure. After more research, I came to the conclusion that it made some sense as to why there seemed to be quite a few English language articles and blog posts regarding the term - North American practitioners (and beyond) most likely need the word more formally explained to them to have any hope of understanding. That was the idea behind this article of course, to try and utilize the available citations to form the more authoritative repository for this information that Wikipedia is. Certainly, if any specific concerns come to mind, please do let me know and I’ll do my best to personally address them. Buddy23Lee (talk) 19:55, 9 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
