Misleading title

I think that the title of the article is misleading. Has somebody heard about such a thing like 'Polish culture'? Maybe 'Culture in Poland' would be appropriate. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.30.216.38 (talk) 09:03, 19 February 2009 (UTC)

Culture template

A revision of periods 1945-present could either reclassify Soc-Realism/Modern to something like PRL/III RP or Soc-Real/Solidarity/Post-Solidarity. Current classifications fail to really capture the changing mindset, and could make it a lot easier to write. The WWII article should pretty straightforward, and the missing interbellum (II RP) article seems important, but is a bit beyond me. Cinema is missing. rmo13 18:14, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

Sections

I propose we divide up the article into sections by art (i.e. Literature), with each section linking to a main article (Main article: Literature of Poland). I think that's better than having a massive "History" section. Appleseed 16:01, 23 September 2005 (UTC) Amen.---

Pop culture seems to be completely missing: Poezja śpiewana, etc. Jazz reference misses the great jazz of the II RP. Film also misses interbellum. A folk section could help those of us who can't tell a Krakowiak from a Mazurka or think all Polish kapela sound like Eddie B. rmo13 18:14, 14 February 2006 (UTC)

First mention of article name

I propose removing the links on the words 'culture' and 'Poland' at the start of the article. I just wanted to check whether there was a prior decision that agreed upon the links. Ciraric 13:33, 26 December 2005 (UTC)

Some thoughts

1. The article reads more like a travel brochure than an encyclopedia article.

2. I would mention Oskar Kolberg's vast ethno-musicological work (see http://www.oskarkolberg.pl/).

3. In her book, Music in the Culture of Polish Galicia – 1772-1914, Jolanta T. Pekacz makes Polish culture (i.e., Polish Galicia in the specified time period) sound much more insular and less cosmopolitan than this article does.

Merge Romanesque with Gothic

On our current template we have separate articles for Romanesque and Gothic periods. Yet Romanesque redirects to Romanesque architecture, and Gothic is a disambiguation page. I'd like to replace those two links with Middle Ages in Poland (which we could base on this great resource [1], for a start). Polish Middle Ages basically fit nicely into the European High Middle Ages (which start around 1000 AD, and incorporate both Romanesque and Gothic periods). Musings

I just spent considerable amount of time editing this article for clarity fully aware of the fact that this is not a finished encyclopedic entry by any stretch of the imagination. It is, but an essay reminiscent of a Foreword to an anthology on Polish culture, giving only an indication of the main areas of interest to be researched by the reader. Not all individual suppositions could be referenced in such a generalist approach. Therefore, to provide sources in order to meet the request stated: {unreferenced||date=December 2005}} is not a reasonable expectation in my view at this stage of development.

Chapter on Science

I'm afraid User 82.239.2.132 who on 23 December 2006 added a new chapter called Science, misunderstood the subject and purpose of this article. There's a different article for User 82.239.2.132 to devote his/hers energy to called Science in Poland.

For comparison, articles on Cultures of France, Germany, England, and Italy share a number of themes across the national borders like Art, Literature (Language), Religion, Education (Schools/Academia), Cuisine, etc. There's no place for Science in an article on culture. Sorry.

Modern culture of Poland

1. Non-existing article about Interbellum. 2. Socialist realism article is way too short. 3. In Culture in Modern Poland there is too much information that should be moved to Socialist realism. Again Post-Communism section don't exist at all.

I only wanted to say that this is quite strange that this article is marked as Top-importance on WikiProject Poland and in fact nothing changed in Post-Communism section for several months and I really think that it should be done. The sooner the better. Unfortunetly my english is as bad as you can see, so I can't really do anything about it. Hraharu 14:21, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Culture in People's Republic of Poland

I think that {{Culture of Poland sidebar}} needs a little change. There was more to the culture of People's Republic of Poland than Socialist realism in Poland; I'd therefore suggest replacing the Socialist realism... with the Culture of... article. Or perhaps we could use a shorter name, culture of People's Poland, based on this book. Any suggestions, including sources, appreciated! Literature section is lacking Latin totally

Only vernacular literature is included. This is a serious problem, as Poles were writing in Latin much more longer before first genuine vernacular literature appeared and much longer after Kochanowski. I think poetry and theoretical activities of Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski can illustrate this question a bit.

But this lack of Latin can also reflect opinion, that the only Polish literature is the one written in Polish. If it is the real reason, we must accept that Polish literature is literature written by Poles* and the question of a language does not matter here.** All handbooks of Polish literature include Polish literature written in Latin.***


  • there are, however, some sources for the history of Poland written by foreigners and they are usually included when talking about rise of Polish Christian culture.
    • literature written in Polish by foreigners should be also included, but it is my private opinion but I can strength it using the example of Mikołaj Krzysztof "the Orphan" Radziwiłł who wrote his work on pilgrimage in Polish, although identified himself as Lithuanian.

why did the poles immigrate to the us
