WP:LEAD
  • Since the LEAD is a summary of the article, we can only tell if it is perfect when we know what the article is. Since you still have some major text expansions pending, I expect that the LEAD will expand. Let's try to keep it to 4 or less paragraphs and 3000 characters though.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 15:20, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • No, both characters were fictional, I've already mentioned them in the lead, and cited with a source. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 07:23, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I removed all the citations, I think it is better to put none. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 16:13, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have mentioned the "Dallas nativity" in the LEAD, it was a great idea. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 16:13, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • How about "same of"? And "Dallas origins" is better, so I swapped the word. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 19:29, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Someone already copy-edited sentence to "the same as Ron Woodroof's". --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 06:33, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Casting
  • I've already mentioned this, that McConaughey was cast when producer sent him the script in 2009, but director got involved in 2011. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 02:45, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Actor was already attached since 2009. And yes they were confirmed on the same date in 2011 but they should be mentioned in different sections, as they are now. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 07:22, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • They joined after the final script which was sent to McConaughey by producer in 2009 and later to director in 2011 (already mentioned). --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 02:47, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I am a little bit confused on the writing of the script. Did they go back to the 2001 script and scrap all the subsequent attempts? This needs to be clarified for the reader.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:46, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes they went back to the original script by Borten and Wallack, I mentioned it in 5th line of 2nd paragraph of "Development" section. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 02:45, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • No, source says, "to see if the Texas native would be interested in playing another Texas native." So we will not change that. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 07:17, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Look for "Like Ron, he’s from Dallas, he’s handsome, and he has a twinkle in the eye. Matthew also has intensity and intelligence like Ron did, mixed with that cowboy charisma and fighter’s spirit. He was beyond perfect for the role" in Focus Films.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 07:22, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Alright, I got your idea now, I though of that first. I'm going to swap the word. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 07:27, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • More details about about "pursuit of McConaughey" in the "Casting" section. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 16:12, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Release
Box office
  • I don't understand, what do you mean? Should I add more dates, but of what? Please express directly. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 16:39, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I added the dates as much as I could find appropriate. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 12:08, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Was their any relationship between its opening strategy and the awards nomination calendar? When were Golden Globe nominations announced? When were Oscar ballots due?--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:03, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've not read anything about the strategy but I've dates for Golden Globe nominations and Oscar ballots due. So, where do I put them (I mean which section)? --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 16:39, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • With the lack of dates above it is hard to tell you what to do. However, usually every year there are one or two movies that don't open very wide, but the buzz is really good and with good GG feedback they expand in advance of Oscar nominations. I think expanding to wide release as people are voting for Oscar nominations is considered strategic for a film with the goods. See if you can find some November press that talks about their expanding release.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 06:20, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sorry, I couldn't find anything about release strategy, but only Oscar predictions and awards dates. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 06:04, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Please tell me what you have for the end of voting date for nominees and for winners and announcement dates of nominees and winners for both the Golden Globes and Oscars. Let me see if I can give you any better guidance based on the dates you have already mentioned.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 12:02, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I've found these links 1, 2 and 3, please help me with these. I don't think if there will be a strategy given anywhere, but see if you got anything. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 17:19, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have not looked at your links. I have use an old version of the GG page and an old version of the Academy award page. January 12, 2014 GG awards were announced. Jan 17, DBC jumped from 125 to 419 theatres. January 16, 2014 Academy award nominations announced. Jan 24, DBC jumped from 419 theatres to 1,110. Assuming January 16 was too late to affect Jan 17 theatre counts, we can explain both of these jumps. Look for sources that back these two jumps up.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 21:43, 5 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • IMO, you have not presented causality. There are two possibilities regarding the jump from 125 to 419 to 1110 theatres:
  1. The count went to 419 due solely to the GG awards because the Academy Award nominations came to late for theatres to adjust.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 05:00, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  2. The count went to 419 partly due to the GG awards, but also partly due to some theatres that were able to make a late switch regarding their schedule. Then the late movers were able to change their schedules based on the Academy awards and the sales from the 419 theatres resulting in more theatres were added.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 05:00, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • Note that the current text does not present any explanation for the jump from 419 to 1110 screens. I am surprised that you can't find anything in the press saying that following the Oscar announcement the screen count went up. I think the Jan 16 nomination announcement was too late for the Jan 17 jump. There should be sources for this. I think the move from 125 to 419 was almost entirely due to the GG results. There must have been some press regarding the jump in screen counts so that we don't have to guess.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 13:44, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • What do you mean by Dallas run?
  • Yes add the deadline stories. Mention GG wins, SAG wins and Academy award noms. Also note the PSA (per screen average I believe), which is a reason to further expand. Add mention of how it did well in the large cities.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 13:52, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move the open date stratagy to the beginning of the section before stats on its open. Then I would mention the week 1, 2 and 3 screen counts and totals. Then say it opened wide as planned for Thanksgiving with 666 screens.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 13:52, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • When talking about the timing being strategic also note that the thanksgiving wide-release coincided with the GG nomination ballot deadline and was a little bit before the SAG ballot deadline.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 13:59, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • P.S. Often when a film only opens in a handful of theatres (like 9) it is possible to find out which cities it was released in. E.g., the 9 might have only been NY and Dallas. The press releases for that week might say. Check deadline and other sources.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 14:05, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • This seems to be rushed with sloppy prose and shoddy citations:
  1. "The film's release was previously set for December 5, hoping to gain a competitive edge amid an incredibly crowed playing field, Focus Features shifted to November 1 believing the new date was ideal to launch a platform release in the awards season.[46] Because it was a serious awards contender, so Focus set the date in November for Oscars strategy like 2013 Oscar winner Argo was released in October 2012.[47]" A transition (but or however mightwork) is needed before hoping. So is not needed before Focus.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 20:22, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's done. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 02:49, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  1. Is there a reason why you don't want to present week 2 expansion stats?--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 20:22, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
No, why would I not explain that, just ask. I'm going for it. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 02:49, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  1. The average reader does not know that people get their GG ballots in late November or even understand the meaning of awards season. this tells us DBC opened wide as people were receiving their ballots that had to be returned two weeks later. There must be sources for receiving ballots and ballot deadlines. Cite and present exact ballot dates for GG and SAG ballots if possible. Quoting my imprecise phrasing is not so useful.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 20:22, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  1. Use this archive of the link in the page above.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 20:25, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  2. here are SAG key dates. We can see that SAG ballots were mailed by Nov 20 and GG ballots were mailed by Nov 27. Thus opening on Thanksgiving weekend is strategic. Mention these dates. It is not really OR since they have said they changed their dates to help the movie contend for awards.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 20:32, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  1. Make the January re-expanded opening a separate paragraph. Link to GG and SAG ceremonies and use dates.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 20:22, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's done. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 02:49, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • "The film was released in the awards season, and from its theater run looked like it might be the strategy for the film." does not summarize the source. The source says that the film was rescheduled to November 1 because it was a serious awards contender and it also stated that the original intention was to expand to wide release for the Thanksgiving weekend.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 05:03, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • It seems unusual for a film to gross more abroad than in the US. Were there any foreign countries where this ranked high on the annual box office lists? Were there any countries where it spent time at number 1 on the weekly box office?--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:07, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hmm, absolutely it is unusual to gross more abroad than in the US but I couldn't find any foreign records of high ranked or no. 1 on the weekly box office. I think the information I already put is better. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 16:57, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well we are only dealing with 27million. I guess if it were 55 US and more abroad there might be more to say on this issue. I just thought that there might have been a particular foreign market where it did well.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 06:15, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I searched for this, there's no one International record found for this film. It just grossed high in the UK (UK, Ireland, etc) after US and then in Germany. I couldn't find anything particular in foreign market. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 11:37, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would end te 2nd paragraph by replacing "The wide release coincided with the Golden Globe nomination ballot deadline and was a little bit before the Screen Actors Guild Awards ballot." with The strategic Thanksgiving weekend release came at the time of year that nomination ballots were being sent for major awards: The Screen Actors Guild mailed Screen Actors Guild Award nomination ballots to its voters on November 20,[citation that I gave you] and the nomination ballots for the Golden Globe Awards were mailed to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association members on or before November 27.[Citation]--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 03:20, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • If you can find a citation stating this point it would also be helpful, but we can present these two dates to the reader for them to draw their own conclusions.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 03:20, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • The third paragraph needs clarification too. Let me think about it.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 03:27, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I would change "Twelfth weekend after limited release, Golden Globe awards were announced on January 12, 2014,[51] Academy award nominations were announced on January 16,[52] and after the Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced on January 18,[53] the film's theater run jumped to 294 more screens with a total of 419, the film grossed $17,813,220 with an average of $2,246 per theater from January 17–19.[3][54]" to "71st Golden Globe Awards were announced on January 12, 2014 with Dallas Buyers Club winning both of its nominations, and the film earned six 86th Academy Awards nominations were announced on January 16.[52] The twelfth weekend after limited release, the film's theater run jumped from 125 screens to a total of 419 and the film grossed $17,813,220 with an average of $2,246 per theater from January 17–19.[3][54] After the 20th Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced on January 18 with Dallas Buyers Club winning two of its three nominations, during the thirteenth weekend..."--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:21, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hey. I just realized Thanksgiving was the 28th last year. You need to revise the text to say it began with a December 5 target date and moved to November with a targetted Thanksgiving weekend wide-release date. However, it eventually went wide the weekend before Thanksgiving.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 19:58, 8 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • It already mentioned in the 2nd paragraph, "The film then strategically opened wide in 666 theaters on its targeted Thanksgiving weekend date on November 22." --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 03:43, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I revised a bit, if it works it'd be good. Otherwise please write a sentence to put there. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 10:24, 9 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • You need to say that they moved the opening date to November 1 before discussing the November 1 statistics. At that time mention the expected Thanksgiving wide opening. These statements should probably be in the first paragraph when you are discussing the opening strategy rather than the second. You can say it actually opened early either in that paragraph or where you do now.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 14:08, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Critical response
  • This was one of the most important films of the year. You only mention one notable critic. Please look at the reviews in Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes and incorporate each critic with his own wikipedia article.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 17:16, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • I have never noticed a film with 227 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. If you find over 12 or 15 reviewers with their own wikipedia article you can stop.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 22:30, 31 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is a film that you could probably find 500 reviews for (250 just from Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic). Of all the hundreds and hundreds of reviews why are you going with Collider, The Arts Guild and JoBlo? Can't you find notable critics with articles.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 06:12, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Haha, I was just trying to learn that how to put the reviews. I'm going to replace them with notables. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 11:37, 4 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Hmm, that's what given there. I wrote everything I found notable. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 11:39, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • What about this and details like this should be in better sources. Google stuff like Jared Leto Oscar performance, Jared Leto Golden Globe, Jared Leto Oscar predictions instead of just reading the film reviews.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 13:32, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • P.S. it is just not credible that you can't find content on an Academy Award best supporting actor performance. There has to be more than a couple of lines of content about his character, even if it was a minor role compared to the lead.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 20:50, 6 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • You are making progress, but I suggest adding the intriguing perspective from Time that I linked above. Also the whole method actor thing in the 2nd link above needs to be incorporated, but hopefully from a better source.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 13:42, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think I've added more perspective from other Times' links than that of given by you. But the other link you gave, I think it would be settled in "Casting" section. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 16:48, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Add it where it belongs. It is important content, especially if you can find a national story about it, but the local story is a WP:RS if that is all we've got.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 18:26, 7 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Soundtrack
  • I hope the expansion I made will work. Added track-listing template, reviews, releasing dates, etc. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 19:29, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • No need of that. Yes it would be needed only when it is charted. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 16:39, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I don't know about reviewers but the websites are prominent and (highly) notable. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 16:39, 3 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • I honestly think that this article has a long way to go. I could make claims that it fails WP:WIAGA 3 for breadth and depth. Nonetheless, I will give the nominator a chance to respond to concerns by putting it on hold.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 04:18, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm improving the article, and please put it on hold until it's done. And see Chef (film), it is a GA, a small and brief article. But I'm trying to put content in it and it'll be able for GA. I've completed the lead section and casting is also almost done. I'm speeding up now :). --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 08:36, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Chef (film) (9875 characters) is also a brief GA. However, that article is about a current movie that may expand over the coming year, especially if it accumulates favorable recognition in terms of nomination and awards. Also, it will have additional content regarding it box office performance. You have to compare this to a 2013 or prior movie that has a completed box office and awards section to be fair. At least Chef included a handful of notable critics and a dozen or so notable media sources in the critical commentary section. FWIW, the three films that I have reviewed since August 2013 are Inside Man (24755 characters), The Incredibles (29179 characters), Schindler's List (35278 characters). Chef also briefly discussed its soundtrack. When this was below 14000 characters and I stated it was surprisingly brief to me, you can see why.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 10:30, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • OK, leave that, but I'm expanding the article now, it'll take just a couple of days. Just keep an eye on my work, please let me know if there's something wrong. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 11:03, 1 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Development section is completed, I didn't leave anything behind in its development. Now I need to work on the lead, box office, music and the response. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 02:50, 2 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • I think the article is in pretty good shape. We should recheck that the WP:LEAD adequately summarizes the greatly expanded text. Note that the lead is now 3 paragraphs and 2598 characters. 4 paragraphs and about 3000 characters would be quite acceptable for an article of this size.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 16:40, 10 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  •  Done It is now 4 paragraphs and +3100 characters. --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 02:34, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • This article has gotten a lot better. It is now GA caliber for in terms or presenting the importance of this movie with proper detail. I think this article has lots of potential for FA in terms of content, but it will probably need a bit of a copyedit for FA. Thus, I encourage an attempt at FA, but probably see if you can get a PR first. I am now PASSing this article.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 05:18, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oh my...! Thanks TonyTheTiger, thank you for the review. It is my first time more than a half contributed article passed to GA. I think I deserved a Barnstar :). --Captain Assassin! «TCG» 08:55, 11 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
