Comments[edit]

To see Dana Beal in a tie is earth-shattering, and i used to live in the same house as him for 8 years. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.7.70.29 (talkcontribs) 18:36, 30 July 2005

Something gives me the feeling that Dana Beal wrote this biography himself. What kind of douchbag posts his autobiography on wikipedia? Oh, wait, Jeremy Hammond. Blacklisted news was a great fucking book though, it was so cool to see that picture of Logan Square Park filled with yippies. Now it's full of yuppie scumbags. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wmjaypee (talkcontribs) 20:44, 2 March 2006

If Beal wrote it, it would be a lot better than this rambling " 'member when? "; he might be self-important, but he's much more lucid than this.

As someone who knows a bit about the topic, I suggest that the current body of the entry be retained, but clearly marked as an anecdotal snippet from a contemporary. I'll expand the first paragraph with what I know, in a manner more appropriate to an Wikipedia entry. This other content DOES shed some light on Beal in an interesting way, I just don't think it should be above the fold. —Preceding unsigned comment added by FlyingCoyote (talkcontribs) 01:47, 21 March 2006

Allowing for anecdotal material as was placed in this article (probably by AJ or Aron) is one of the things that makes Wikipedia such a good research source. It should be obvious to most readers what is anecdotal. The stuff about Michigan State really captures the spirit of campus cultural protest in the mid-1960s. I cleaned up some of the language that was inappropriate anywhere except a chat room, but left the comment about the Michigan psychiatrist since it seemed to be a case of "poetic license." —Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.188.116.7 (talkcontribs) 03:04, 22 March 2006

This article needs serious cleanup... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.149.68.60 (talkcontribs) 19:13, 17 July 2006

The entire article is so biased in favor of Dana, it's a joke. It would take too long to repute it line by line. People will just have to search elsewhere for information, and do the best they can. Good luck! Denison908 (talk) 22:44, 6 December 2008 (UTC)Denison908[reply]

ReyBrujo, please do not remove this link from the article again as you did on October 22, 2006. Removing it was vandalism in my opinion because it is a reference citation, and was not listed in the external links section. You called it an external link in your comment for removing it.

"Supporting references or footnotes need not be kept to a minimum, but they should be separated from other external links."

It is a supporting reference for this statement in the article: "NYC has had marijuana rallies since 1967." It took me a long time for me to find the 2 supporting references for that statement. It is common knowledge among cannabis advocates, but it is not easy to find citations on the web for it. Both citations are needed since they fill in the picture more clearly. I am putting them in the reference format <ref> </ref>, and creating a reference section, so that the citation nature is further amplified. I also put the other reference links in the article in that format. And I took some of the external links and used them to reference some of the article too. So now there are fewer links remaining in the external links section. There were very few before. --Timeshifter 08:52, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CannabisNews.com archives link for Dana Beal[edit]

ReyBrujo, please do not remove the link from the article again as you did on October 22, 2006. It is a lot easier to link to this specialized archive with a single search link, than it is to link to many of the articles. And it keeps the number of external links down. That is the purpose of most of the rules on the external links guideline pages:

The guideline about using search engine results says "normally" don't use them, not "always" don't use them. I rewrote the description of the link so that its relevance is clearer. CannabisNews is in the link title now, so that the specialized relevance of the link is clearer. --Timeshifter 08:15, 22 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup[edit]

I have removed only the most obvious bullshit, and left a lot of stuff that seems somewhat plausible. I hope other editors will either provide documentation for soeme of the remaining stuff, or else remove it if they believe it to be false. Almost nothing is properly cited. --Leatherstocking 01:34, 28 September 2007 (UTC);[reply]

Protests against John Mitchell?[edit]

From the article: From Number Nine Beal organized demonstrations against the Unification Church, against Roy M. Cohn and John Mitchell and numerous anti-war rallies. Can someone provide clarification, or a source? —Preceding unsigned comment added by RomaC (talkcontribs) 10:17, 4 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Responding to 10 year old comment! (and why not?)
I was actually there for the Moonies demo, so I can assure you it happened, but no news accounts seem to exist; ditto Roy Cohn (which I was not there for, unfortunately) ... and I could only find one account of the John Mitchell demo, which is in James Rosen's biography of Mitchell, The Strong Man: John Mitchell and the Secrets of Watergate. I excerpted it in the Yippie article, under 'street protests'.
James Rosen's book claims the two Yippies who "took responsibility" for the demo were Dana Beal and Steve Conliff.

Money Laundering charges[edit]

He was arrested and charged with money laundering, as the sources make clear. People can't be incarcerated in this country for "facing possible charges". John celona (talk) 01:09, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Actually until the arraignment one has not actually faced the charges. In this case, the arraignment is scheduled for June 12. The NY Times Source quotes the sheriff as saying that he will "face" charges. --Jkp212 (talk) 02:38, 12 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This article now reads like a newspaper[edit]

Does half the article really need to have such lengthy quotes from recent articles, as if wikipedia is a newspaper, which it's not...I've seen some people argue in other articles that "charges" shouldn't even be mentioned in an encylopedic article, only convictions... i don't want to take out another editor's thoughtful additions, so i will kindly ask for him to use his discretion in cutting it down. --Jkp212 (talk) 06:10, 13 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

:That quote from the Times probably is too long. On the other hand, it is actually sourced, and much of the article isn't. --Leatherstocking (talk) 16:32, 8 December 2008 (UTC);[reply]

Dana today[edit]

I think it is remarkable that he has survived in the shark-infested culture of downtown Manhattan. I have known him since I joined the Rock Against Racism (or Reagan) tour of 1983-1984; I am critical of him, but I admire his survivability. I plan to re-connect with him in the near-future when he returns from Africa (if that is in fact where he went!)

Here is a gallery of his events over the years. If you want details, or want to use the pictures, contact me. Generally speaking they are free for use w/ credit to John Bessa.--John Bessa (talk) 21:56, 11 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Alternatively, you can indicate the free image license with a note on your website. Something like, I release all my images (or such and such images) under a particular free image license. There are mainly 2 free image licenses that Wikipedia and the Commons accepts. Lack of sources[edit]

For a year now this article has gone largely unsourced, and what little sourcing there is comes from the Beal-authored book on Ibogaine. Does anyone have any reasonable sources? If not, we should probably reduce the article to a stub. --Leatherstocking (talk) 20:16, 9 October 2009 (UTC);[reply]
I count 26 sources, and every section seems to be sourced. Are there specific assertions that seemm undersourced to you?   Will Beback  talk  23:57, 9 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
::Yes, the entire "History and activism" section. I'm a bit surprised, you're usually such a stickler for sources.--Leatherstocking (talk) 00:59, 10 October 2009 (UTC);[reply]
Beal is a significant figure in the history of the late 1960s and early 1970s. I'd imagine that he's mentioned in various books on the era. What have you found in your research?   Will Beback  talk  01:03, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
::::From reliable sources, only material on his recent arrests, already in the article. His early life turns up nothing. What is your source for him being a "significant figure"? --Leatherstocking (talk) 06:04, 10 October 2009 (UTC);[reply]
Have you tried Google books? They know of several books that mention him.   Will Beback  talk  06:54, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(unindent) Google Books:

Google Scholar:

Google News archive. These search shortcuts pull up many media articles mentioning Dana Beal over many years. There is more than one Dana Beal in the articles though, so other search words such as "marijuana" or "ibogaine" need to be added:

Google Blog search. Useful for finding some more background info, and links to better sources, and media articles not indexed by Google News.

--Timeshifter (talk) 11:41, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

:Of all those sources, the only one I found (outside of Beal's autobiographical chapter in the Ibogaine book) that provides any biographical information is this blog, which is unsuitable as a source. So, we still have two thirds of the article either sourced to the subject's autobiography, or unsourced altogether. --Leatherstocking (talk) 16:32, 12 October 2009 (UTC);[reply]

Rock against Racism[edit]

(unindent) Some verification for some of the autobiographical info might be found in the Google News archive. It goes back many years. Other media articles might be found elsewhere on the web, too, or in libraries. The Google News archive only archives some media sources.

I found some of Dana Beal's "Rock against Racism" info in the news media archive:

Some of those media references can be added to the article. I don't have time right now to do much editing on Wikipedia. Maybe some others can help. --Timeshifter (talk) 15:59, 14 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Quotation use[edit]

The article relies excessively on several (three or four) very long quotations from books and articles. These need to be trimmed or paraphrased, in my view. In particular:

  • New York Times quote "Beal was described in interviews" is 213 words.
  • Ibogaine chapter four quote "Dana was born in the same hospital in Ravenna, Ohio..." is 179 words.
  • Alexander Lekhtman quote: "The action came just days after the U.S. Drug Enforcement... is 288 words.

213+179+288 makes 680 words used for quotations, which I find to be excessive. --- Possibly (talk) 22:37, 29 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Significantly better now, so I have removed the tag. Thanks Randy Kryn.--- Possibly (talk) 02:54, 30 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

NYT Profile[edit]
