Name problems[edit]

This page name could be a problem because wiki coding interprits the slash in the name to mean that it's a subpage (as is my understanding). Oddly, there seems to be problems only on the talk page. I would suggest a move to avoid confusion, but I'm not sure if there are any alternative names for the breed. Could the name be hyphenated instead? --Pharaoh Hound (talk)

Height[edit]

"32-37 cm (+/- 2 cm)" is 30-39 cm, right? Adding tolerances to range limits doesn't make sense to me. -- Timberframe (talk) 13:40, 19 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is this the original Canis Domesticus?[edit]

Linnaeus coined the terms "Canis domesticus" and Canis familiaris in Systema Naturae. I have been trying to find out what distinctions he was making. The name latter was supposed to mean, familiar, common, unspecial dog. Many other terms meant special kinds of dogs, such as Canis aquaticus, for poodles and such, and Canis vertigus for the special turnspit dog. This is why "Canis domesticus" was not chosen when they wanted to make unite all the dogs into one subspecies of Canis Lupus, and domesticus stopped being a valid taxon. I gathered from less than the most reliable sources that by "Canis domesticus", Linnaeus was referring to the common farmer's dog, which was supposed to be different from the street dog, familiaris. As Linnaeus was Sweedish, is it not best to assume that he must have been talking about this dog? Does anyone know? I really want to find this out as the obsolete taxa should still link to the right type of animal so long as they are listed as synomyms by experts, and this one is, and right now, I can't confirm the story that he meant "common Sweedish farm dog" when he said "Canis domesticus" originally. Has anyone ever heard that this type of dog was in fact the orignal referent of the term Canis domesticus?
