I am proposing that only the sections in ISO/IEC 11179 that are related to naming be merged into this article. A possible exception might be the text relating to database table names, which might move to Relational database instead.

Time warp?[edit]

What does ISO 11179 have to do with data element names? Data element (aka column name, attribute, tuple? & others) was what we called data back in the days of punch cards & ISAM files. 11179, while a nice idea, is a very late comer to the game & has had minimal impact to date. Where does ISO 11179 discuss collections?[edit]

The article says "Tables are Collections of Entities, and follow Collection naming guidelines", seemingly paraphrasing some part of ISO 11179. I agree: ISO 11179 says nothing about this at all. I believe this connection comes from Joe Celko's SQL Programming Style (ISBN 978-0120887972) section 1.2.1. The problem with that section in the book and, by extension, this comment in the article, is that it feels like someone is looking for a standards-based justification for their own personal preference.
