Trivia[edit]

Tedious anecdote about being Gotcha'd by Noel Edmonds in the "Career at Radio 1" Section. Is anyone really interested in this?

Campbell[edit]

Nicky Campbell's page claims he replaced DLT, not Danny Baker, after his resignation. Which is correct? Guinness 11:03, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Have discovered that it was indeed NC who replaced him[1], although DB took over 9 weeks later. Guinness 11:11, 26 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nickname[edit]

Is that "hairy cornflake" nickname entry genuine? Anybody have a source? I'm suspicious that this is vandalism. Guinness 13:49, 4 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Well I'm unsure if it was bestowed by himself or by others, but it's certainly the nickname by which he's popularly known --172.189.28.245 14:37, 17 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

When he presented the breakfast show on weekday mornings, he became known as The Hairy Cornflake.

Arthurvasey (talk) 20:22, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

DLT also presented The Sunday Request Show on the BBC World Service (late 70s- early 80s?). In there he nick named himself 'The Hairy Monster'.

That's actually a joke from Alan Partridge who keeps speaking his annoyance about DLT and at one time refers to him as a 'hairy cornflake' —Preceding unsigned comment added by 118.210.166.21 (talk) 11:09, 5 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The only recollection I have of him being called "Hairy Cornflake" was on the Alan Partridge show. He was reguarly known as "Hairy Monster" though. Also, back in the 1970s, he used to have a column in the "Top of the Pops" magazine, in which he was referred to as "The Hairy Monster from the M1" (and the column was "A Hairy Monster Problem Page")> — Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.198.33.252 (talk) 14:42, 2 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Clean up[edit]

I've flagged this for a clean up. It rarely uses language appropriate to an encyclopedia ('luckily they were not broadcast over the airwaves or he may have got into considerable trouble!', 'Radio 2 declined as they said they had no need for a hairy cornflake') and a large section is devoted to the 'Gotcha' DLT received from Noel Edmonds, which is also hardly of encyclopedic significance.

I agree, although there should be a reference to his nickname as the "Hairy Conflake".

Added Reference for 'Hairy Cornflake', and a few more external references / links. Removed Clean up section.--86.31.230.29 07:10, 2 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Boxing career[edit]

I doubt that its true, espically him being hit by mike tyson or david gower replacing him. There is no refrence that i sould find of this on the internet —Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.66.8.20 (talk) 15:24, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Drag queen[edit]

Any truth to the claim that he was a "regular drag queen" in the 1970s? The citation looks pretty dubious, linking to a site about drag racing, which (to my mind) is not the same thing.Somnolentsurfer (talk) 14:39, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Picture[edit]

I'm pretty sure the picture is of a Grecian urn or somesuch, and not of the DJ. Is there a picture of Travis that can be put up? Red dwarf (talk) 23:53, 4 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Eurovision[edit]

Did he commentate on the TV or radio coverage? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.189.103.145 (talk) 06:29, 8 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just heard on Radio 2 that he has been arrested with links to the Jimmy Saville scandal. I have found no posts online so far from reliable news sorces, will be updating this should one crop up so keep your eyes out if you find one. Mishka Shaw (talk) 13:59, 15 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Pop North . . .[edit]

. . . wasn't a daily show. It was recorded at the Playhouse Theatre, Hulme, on Monday evenings and broadcast on Thursday lunchtimes. This is original research. I used to go. Hengistmate (talk) 17:53, 24 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Unsourced content[edit]

Have removed the following:

===Noel's House Party Gotcha=== Travis was famously the victim of a practical joke (or "Gotcha") by Noel Edmonds on his TV show Noel's House Party. His radio quiz was unknowingly hijacked by two fake pub quiz teams which gave absurd answers to every question. His 'reaction' at the revelation had to be recorded twice because his initial outburst was full of swearwords. He said to Noel, "Edmonds, you are a dead man! I don't want your Gotcha!"[citation needed] Travis had his "revenge" the following week when, by arrangement with the Noel's House Party production team, he hijacked Noel Edmonds's show live on air, culminating in Edmonds ending up in the Great House's infamous green gunge tank.

Once referenced, it may be reincorporated. --Technopat (talk) 11:33, 23 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You may wish to remove same from Edmonds' page. The Rambling Man (talk) 11:40, 23 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It is easily referenced by the BBC but it is also a copyright violation - QuiteUnusual (talk) 12:01, 23 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

15 year old girl one alleged victim[edit]

Needs the section changing re his charges, as he states it was only women, yet one at least was only 15.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-24622467 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 31.53.253.107 (talk) 18:22, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Quotes[edit]

Three self-justifying quotes from Travis is about two-and-a-half too many. We don't have quotes from his victims, quite rightly, and presenting it this way breaches WP:NPOV. --John (talk) 21:40, 19 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WP:SOFIXIT.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 04:35, 20 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed two of the quotes because they have been overtaken by events. I left in the BBC quote because Travis was right to express concerns about the first trial in 2014; despite a large amount of time and money being spent on it by the Crown Prosecution Service, none of the fourteen charges stood up in court. This edit also removed the important fact that DLT worked for Magic AM. Yes, the cite was the Daily Mail, but there are other sources available. The reason why "We don't have quotes from his victims" is because only one charge stood up in court, which was a researcher on the Mrs Merton Show in 1995. The CPS dragged up some very old allegations which amounted to one person's word against another's dating back many years. In the era before Operation Yewtree, most of these allegations would not have gone within a mile of a court because the evidence would have been considered too old and thin. Travis may have wandering hand syndrome, but when push came to shove, the CPS had little success in court.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 05:44, 20 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So you reckon he is entitled to a self-justifying quote because you think he was harshly treated? He was, on the other hand, found guilty of indecent assault. There's something not quite right here. Let me think about it some more. --John (talk) 13:30, 20 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Losing a football match 14-0 would be quite an achievement. The prosecution managed to do this at the first trial. At the second trial, the judge said in his sentencing remarks "I am to sentence you for a single offence of indecent assault and the Crown’s case that you had a propensity to commit indecent assaults has not been made out."[2] Nevertheless, the prosecution had spent a large amount of time and money on getting just one guilty verdict by a majority. Job done, box ticked, and another triumph for Operation Yewtree. Travis was financially ruined by the prosecution's scattergun approach.[3] I agree that a direct quote from Travis isn't the best way of making this point, although he is entitled to criticise the way that the first trial went. Various newspaper columnists - even while expressing a dislike for what Travis did in 1995 - were worried that the whole thing was out of proportion.[4] If every man who had jiggled a woman's breasts or pinched a woman's bum in the 1970s ended up in court with a legal bill running into hundreds of thousands of pounds, the bankruptcy courts would be overflowing. Since you dislike the quote from Travis himself, Rosie Millard's article may be a better source.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 14:22, 20 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DLT's March 2018 return to D-Lux Radio[edit]

Re this edit: the source is rather vague, and D-Lux Radio does not launch until March 2018 (which would explain why I'd never heard of it before). Due to the problem with WP:CRYSTAL, this should wait until the station is launched. The intro video on the main page says that Graham Dene, Mike Read, Timmy Mallett and Emperor Rosko will be on the station as well.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 06:55, 30 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Travis is also reported to be joining United DJs Radio which is a station that hasn't launched yet. Still an element of WP:CRYSTAL.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 06:50, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Re this edit: the source doesn't strictly verify this because it was written back in January. However, the schedules of United DJs say that he is on air on Saturday morning from 11 am to 1 pm.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 05:20, 27 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hyperlinks.[edit]

I'm not a great fan of hyperlinks. I was when I first saw them though. Over time my dislike of hyperlinks has increased. There are too many of them. Do we need links to Bury, Lancs.? Eg. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.174.189.51 (talk) 21:43, 15 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This is known as WP:OVERLINK. I don't have a problem with linking to Bury, Greater Manchester as the article may be read by people who are not British and may not know where it is, or very much about it. Words should be delinked only if they are very common and all English speakers would understand them.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 06:16, 16 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

ULSS[edit]

@Ianmacm: RE your revert: the BBC article used as a proximal reference is entirely about the AG deciding not to refer the sentence to the CoA as too lenient, and the only lawful way for the AG to refer a sentence to the CoA for excessive leniency is precisely what's called the unduly lenient sentence scheme. My edit was just the most natural way of working in a link to a (section of) an article discussing the ULSS. The BBC article even uses the specific 'unduly lenient' language in quoting the AG, so it's not even an inferential stretch, let alone a hijacked reference as the edit summary accuses me of doing. I'm not going to edit war to re-add the link, but I do think that the link would add value as it discusses the procedure in more detail and provides context. Would you consider self-reverting? 80.7.186.76 (talk) 18:01, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You've added the same wording to various articles today. This is probably correct but I reverted because it wasn't in the source.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 18:47, 13 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Shaving off the Beard[edit]

DLT was well known for his beard throughout his career. At sometime during the 1980s DLT shaved off his beard in a change of image. How long did this phase last? Has anyone got a reference for this? 62.232.176.62 (talk) 10:32, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This source suggests it was around 1985. There's another image of him here, with old Denis "Silly Billy" Healey, dated 26 June 1985. Martinevans123 (talk) 10:43, 10 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
So it wasn't a figment of my imagination. Thanks Martin! 62.232.176.62 (talk) 18:13, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think he had to stop using his nickname of "the hairy cornflake", at least for a while. Martinevans123 (talk) 18:18, 14 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Martin - could this episode make the main Wiki page? 62.232.176.62 (talk) 00:05, 2 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
