Clarification in leading paragraph?[edit]

Three become involved with a dying farmer.

Hindi movie Gharaonda[edit]

Hindi movie Gharaonda, staring Amol Palekar and Zarina Wahab, had a similar story line as that of Days of Heaven.

DAYS OF HEAVEN BUDGET etc...[edit]

The page states a citation is needed re the film's budget. I worked on the film as a production assistant. As I recall, the budget was not $3 million but more like $6-$7 million. When post-production dragged on, producer Bert Schneider had to take out a mortgage on his home to secure the completion of the film. The shooting went over budget and over schedule by several weeks, which is why Nestor Almendros had to leave to meet his commitment to Truffet to shoot The Man Who Loved Women.

The production was very difficult, mostly because Malick never knew what he wanted from one day to the next. We shot at 'magic hour' so often the crew joking called the film 'A Shot in the Dark'.

Many actors came in to shoot a number of scenes and sequences never used in the film, including Armand Assante, who can be seen riding the top of the train at the beginning of the film. Some of these scenes were written by Sam Sheppard or Malick or improvised. Stuart Margolin, who plays the foreman who Richard Gere hits with the shovel in Chicago early in the film is also seen as a different character entirely when they get to the farm! Actor songwriter, Paul Jabara also shot a role as Linda Manz tutor that did not make it into the film. The same year (1978) that Days of Heaven was nominated for 4 Oscars, he won for writing "Last Dance" for Donna Summer from the movie Thank God It's Friday (1978).

I became good friends with Nestor Almendros for the balance of his too short life. He told me that Haskel Wexler not only wanted credit on the film but wanted to take the ENTIRE credit for the film, citing that Nestor was not a member of the AMERICAN SOCIETY OF CINEMATOGRAPHERS - Nestor tried to join the guild to secure his credit, but they would not let him into the 'club' until he won his Oscar for the film.
