Scammonden Dam?[edit]

This article, "Deanhead Reservoir", states Locally, Deanhead is known as Scammonden Dam, the dam that separates it from Scammonden Water. But surely Scammonden Dam is on Scammonden Reservoir, that carries the M62. I propose deleting this sentence, and also re-making the redirect page called "Scammonden Dam", that currently points here, to point instead to "Scammonden Reservoir". Any thoughts? What then is the name of the dam that is between this reservoir and Scammoden reservoir? Keith D (talk) 00:00, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the reply. Might it first be worth confirming some related data?

  • The body of water, whose dam (at its north) carries the M62 is known both as "Scammonden reservoir" and "Scammonden water".
  • About one mile south-west of S.reservoir is another reservoir, called "Deanhead Reservoir" (dammed at its north-east).

Are we agreed on those water-body names? (Google maps seems to confirm the water-body names.)

It seems reasonable to assume, in the absence of contrary evidence, that "S.dam" is the dam containing "S.reservoir" and "D.dam" the dam containing "D.reservoir".

But this article ("D.reservoir") currently claims that its own dam is called "S.dam". What, then, is the name of the dam on "S.reservoir".

To add to the confusion, one source claims the name "D.dam" for motorway-carrying dam at "S.reservoir". And this source carries at least a little authority, being UK parliament Hansard. So if Wikipedia (as it currently stands) and Hansard (if there is no typing error there) are combined, one ends up with S.reservoir being dammed by D.dam, and D.reservoir being dammed by S.dam.

That just doesn't seem right. What's going on? Feline Hymnic (talk) 22:53, 22 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Another piece of the jigsaw is staring us right in the face and we missed it! The picture in this 'D.reservoir' article is captioned 'S.dam', and it is clearly the near-completion M62-carrying dam at the north end of S.reservoir. So unless there is evidence to the contrary, I propose deleting the S.dam sentence, and adjusting the S.dam wikilink to point to the S.reservoir article. Is that OK? Seems like the best thing to do, though there is also the last sentence about the M62 that will also need to go and the image will need moving over to the s-article. I have had a look on Geograph and this image could be used for this article. Keith D (talk) 21:32, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I've migrated the S.dam picture into the S.reservoir article; I've removed the S. information here, and put much of it into the S.reservoir article. Feel free to check, please! But I have no experience of incorporating Geograph pictures into WP articles. Feline Hymnic (talk) 21:54, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
