Past Run aways[edit]

The father stated that he helped Brandon pack his knapsack, calling his bluff and let him run away. Brandon also has been known to run away on several occasions. It was all in this interview.

Autopsy Results[edit]

I just heard on the radio here in Toronto that his autopsy results have been released, stating that the cuase of death was chest trauma, induced from falling out of a tree during foulplay. I would like to update the article but cannot, due to protection. I don't really understand Wikipedia's user level criteria, but if a reputable member could please update this in the article, I bet it would help spread the news of what happened to him. Move to "Brandon Crisp"?[edit]

IMHO, the article ought to be called Brandon Crisp as:

  1. It is no longer considered a disappearance and,
  2. Other Wikipedia articles are named for the person (e.g. Natalee Holloway, Reena Virk, Leslie Mahaffy, Christine Jessop), NOT what happened to them.

I understand that some articles about people that disappeared are styled as this one (Disappearance of [...], e.g. Disappearance of Madeleine McCann), but this runs counter to most of the articles in the unexplained disappearances category.

See also WP:NAME and Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(people); I don't see something there to support the Disappearance of [...] form. Nephron  T|C 16:11, 9 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose - there's nothing noteworthy or important about this person (or his death). The cause of his disappearance (i.e. not being allowed to play video games) is, therefore I say this page is aptly named and should not be renamed. A page called "Brandon Crisp" would have nothing to say, except how he disappeared (and was found dead). I realize this page will be a keeper for some time; though when the event has faded into obscurity we can perhaps nominate it for deletion (again) with a more level-headed decision: there really is nothing worthy of a Wikipedia article here, except a rash of news coverage.   • Support - I entirely disagree with the comment that there's nothing noteworthy about this story; while most of the story may be localized to the Ontario, Canada area, the fact is that there are many elements of the story that are somewhat unique. Beyond the huge search efforts and volunteer involvement, tens of thousands of people became involved with the story through outlets such as Facebook groups, and news coverage and emotional response after his body was found was also of a very significant scale. The story has not only the video game element, but also a parenting element, community involvement and outpouring, extremely strong media attention, and an awareness of the story by a large number of people. "it is the event, not the individual that is notable" - but couldn't this be said just as easily about Leslie Mahaffy, etc? She would be an unknown person had she not tragically become the victim of one of Canada's most notorious crimes. Video games connection[edit]

A recent IP edit removed the line "The case spurred discussion of the effects of video game obsession on teenagers" without giving reasons for the removal. I think the line should remain, but maybe not in the opening paragraph. Certainly the video game angle generated a lot of discussion on forums and news articles, even though it was only a peripheral factor to the actual tragedy. OK, I've done some work on the article to bring all the information up to date and consistent with the media reports and also added a few new references.

Suggest deletion[edit]

This article is not about someone truly useful, or noteworthy, or interesting. It's about a case of a parent-teen dispute that an idiotic teen took too far. Given the fact that not only did this story receive an extremely significant amount of media coverage, especially in Ontario, but continues to be discussed and referred to by media, I think it will meet all the criteria for remaining. Not many stories receive the top billing in TV newscasts, front page coverage in newspapers, national TV coverage, etc etc. As pointed out in the article and references, there is debate about whether the story merits some of the attention it has received (especially regarding the video game connection), but the fact that such debate continues is, in itself, part of the story. --GGG65 (talk) 21:55, 26 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Rating[edit]

One topic that the media loves to point out but failed to in this single case was the game rating. The media loves to talk about violence in gaming and this was a game rated Mature, meaning it's intended for those who are 18 or older. Also retailers are not allowed to sell or rent these games to minors, so either his family or an older friend (I assume his parents) bought this game for him. In effect, he got addicted to a game that he should not have been playing at all and the person who bought it is partially responsible. Some of the media sources referenced to in the wiki article (including Gamepolitics.com, CBC's Jesse Brown, and the show Fifth Estate) discuss the game age rating elements of the story, though there is dispute about whether a rating term such as "M for Mature" is inherently obvious to parents, or only to people who have been exposed to the Video Game industry. A common theme of media that does discuss this case and the age ratings/addition issues is that more education for parents is needed. --GGG65 (talk) 00:32, 30 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Dates[edit]

There have been various edits over time of the date of death, since the exact date is not known. These edits have included a 'c.' (circa), eliminating the day of the month to just say "October", or providing a range of possible dates from his disappearance to when he was found. Since all released information from the police and the autopsy indicates that he died either on the night of his disappearance or the early morning of the next day, I think it is appropriate to reflect the date as "c. October 13, 2009". While it may be speculated that he died at a later date, there has been no evidence released to indicate that he camped, obtained food, or otherwise survived beyond the night of his disappearance. --GGG65 (talk) 21:24, 10 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
