Education[edit]

Why is the education infobox template at the bottom of the page? Neither Education nor Further & Higher Education is within the remit of DETI. beano (talk) 13:44, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removal suggestion[edit]

The following text is promotional and could be replaced by a more balanced summary. Does anyone object if it is removed? Gecko177 (talk) 15:51, 1 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

"In order to ensure good governance and harmonious working relations, appropriate relationship documents between DETI and its agencies are in place. (Further information on the Departmental sponsored organisations are available on this website). The purpose of the Departmental Board is to manage Departmental business at a strategic level and to make strategic decisions in relation to economic development policies, strategies of and allocation of resources to DETI agencies, corporate and operating plans. It also gives consideration to reports from each of the DETI agencies in relation to their expenditure and performance. The Board meets six times a year and is chaired by the Permanent Secretary and comprises the two Deputy Secretaries along with the Chief Executive and Corporate Director of both Invest NI and the Northern Ireland Tourist Board. Day to day operations of the Department is managed by the Departmental Senior Management Team."[3]

In addition, MATRIX: Northern Ireland Science Industry Panel, is a business-led expert panel, launched in February 2007 by DETI to advise government on the commercial exploitation of R&D and science and technology in Northern Ireland.[6]

MATRIX’ focus is on the demand led view of what is needed for NI to maximise the commercial potential of R&D, science and technology capabilities. The Panel’s recommendations are the result of the largest collaborative effort of technology industry leaders and experts, ever assembled in Northern Ireland.

The MATRIX panel comprises eleven experts from across business and academia and is chaired by Professor Damien McDonnell OBE. In undertaking its work programme it has brought together more than 70 locally-based business and academic experts with a proven track record in the commercial exploitation of science, technology and R&D.

The Minister for Enterprise, Arlene Foster received the first report of Matrix on 8th October 2008 and receiving the report from the Chairman of MATRIX, Professor Damien McDonnell, the Minister said: “This is not a case of Government speaking to Government, nor is the report an academic study. MATRIX was deliberately created to represent the voice of high-technology industry in Northern Ireland. It is of the utmost importance that we in Government listen to and act upon what our leading business people have to say.” [7]

The Minister undertook to give the report detailed consideration and to bring forward an appropriate plan for implementing its findings. Thanking the MATRIX and Horizon Panel members for their efforts she added: “What I hope and expect to get from the outworking of this MATRIX report is a blueprint for accelerating our economic growth, to give us a genuine step-change in the effectiveness and competitiveness of our economy over the medium to long term.”[7]
