Cuckoo's Nest[edit]

Just a note to remind us include the fact that the fishing scene from One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (film) was shot here. Katr67 05:36, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

World's smallest harbor[edit]

I know that Depoe Bay's harbor is said to be the world's smallest -- there's even a sign proclaiming the fact at the harbor -- but I've always been skeptical of claims like this. Checking the source referenced here I saw it is qualified as "according to the Guinness people", so I added that to this page. My guess is that such a claim depends on how one defines "harbor" and how one measures the exact size of various harbors. Having seen the harbor at Depoe Bay and at Riomaggiore and at Vernazza I'd bet the latter two are smaller -- depending on how you define and measure harbors. In any case, I thought I'd add the qualifier and explain why here. Pfly 06:41, 16 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Cinque Terre harbors are all man made—at least that was my impression while snorkeling near their entrances. Depoe Bay is clearly all natural, though the Guinness citation should say that. I'm inclined to believe it is truly the smallest in the world, though I wouldn't be surprised if there were a smaller one somewhere. Then, I guess, we'd have to amend it to world's smallest harbor on an ocean or something like that. —EncMstr 04:29, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Depoe Bay is defined as being the world's smallest natural navigable harbor. A harbor is different than a port in that a port is a facility for receiving ships and transferring cargo, while a harbor is more strictly defined as a body of water that protects vessels from the elements, I.E. high waves, storms, etc. Now here's how I think they figured this when they made the claim. You can pilot motorized and small sail vessels into the harbor from the bay. The moorage lists have fees for 45 foot vessels. Not small. Not really huge, but not small. Second, it is natural. The breakwaters were added later to help boat, but weren't originally necessary. Ryoga-2003 (talk) 00:12, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bays in Oregon[edit]

You could have just asked me first: diff. I was quite certain that Depoe Bay, the city, and Depoe Bay, the bay are unlikely to merit separate articles, so I added the city to the bay cat. I've done the same with beach articles, pending a separate article on Cannon Beach (Oregon), I've classed Cannon Beach, Oregon as a beach as well as a city. But perpetual stub articles on geographic features seem to be OK so maybe there should be two separate articles. If Depoe Bay is not, in fact, a bay, well of course it should be removed. Does anyone have a better solution? Katr67 (talk) 15:32, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

A search of http://geonames.usgs.gov/domestic/index.html shows that USGS classes Depoe Bay as a Bay... Katr67 (talk) 15:36, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Katr67! Sorry, it didn't occur to me to ask: It was late. I hadn't noticed you editing for a few hours. It was quiet. And I seemed to have the universe to myself. Thanks. —EncMstr 17:45, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

D.B. Cooper[edit]

I live three and a half miles from Depoe Bay, and D.B. Cooper might of been a resident of Depoe Bay before he died. He (if it was Mr. Cooper) went by the name "Wolfgang," and would say he was an attorney, and I do believe he did say he was also a judge. They did not figure out it might of been him until after he died, but they were more than 95% positive it was him. This is probably worth mentioning. However, are there any other websites or publications that mention this? Ryoga-2003 (talk) 22:18, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It is mentioned at D. B. Cooper#William Gossett, but without the Depoe Bay connection. —EncMstr (talk) 23:05, 7 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why do people keep changing Charley's name?[edit]

Charles "Charley" Depoe is the correct spelling of the founder of Depoe Bay. The allotment of land now called Depoe Bay was originally his after the Dawes Act. The last name was never "DEPOT" so please stop editing the name.

His grandson was the late Chief William DePoe. Both of their graves are located on Government Hill on the Siletz Reservation. Please stop putting their names together as they are two different people entirely.

There was never a William "Charley" Depoe.

There are sources on the web regarding this and books including "The Rogue River Indian Wars and its Aftermath, 1850-1980 by EA Schwartz pp. 303-304". I don't know why people continue to incorrectly cite this based upon a website with incorrect information.

Further proof is a photo of Charles' grave http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSsr=81&GScid=39259&GRid=41331453&

It is 2023, and my great-great grandfather's name is still being edited to the incorrect "Charley Depot". Please stop. I asked in 2011. I'm asking again now. His nickname "Depot Charley" is fine to mention, but he was never "Charley Depot" or "Charley DePoe". His real name is Ki-Sa Che-wes-cla, which is far more important to mention than his nickname. His son Robert DePoe changed the DePoe name after being forced to assimilate at the Carlisle Indian School and a more French looking name meant he could fit in easier. There are only conflicting accounts to the name because colonisers liked to do a lot of fantasising about the Natives rather than do the research or listen to the family. 87.74.255.26 (talk) 03:30, 15 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation of Depoe[edit]

It should be noted that "Depoe" is pronounced like the American English pronunciation of depot, i.e., with stress on the first syllable and the e long (but with the silent t replaced by a silent e). 108.246.205.134 (talk) 17:10, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
