Lisa the Babysitter

Doing a search for "Lisa the Babysitter" redirects here, but neither "Lisa" nor "Babysitter" appears anywhere on the page. I assume she's a minor or one-time character from the show, but if there's a redirect then there should be at least be some mention in the content. Cuteswan 13:17, 15 September 2006 (UTC)

She appeared once on the show, as a major character in the episode "Babysitter Blues." If someone were to create an article for that episode, then the redirect page should point there. Nqnpipnr 22:22, 13 March 2007 (UTC)

Proof of Dialouge in "Dexter's Rude Removal"

Can anyone actually prove the word "Cunt" was used in the short? Or was it just a guess because it has foul language. DietLimeCola 05:00, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

No one can prove anything about Dexter's Rude Removal because only a select few have seen it, and those who have refuse to discuss it except for the vague plot. Cunt may have been uttered in it, but it's unlikely we will ever know for sure. DacknotRick 01:39, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

The final word on Dexter's accent

I can't believe I haven't been able to find anything anywhere on the internet even closely resembling the truth about where Dexter's accent comes from. This is a truth I've known for years, from the very first time I saw an episode of Dexter's Laboratory. Dexter's accent comes from none other than the early stand-up of the great Steve Martin! Steve used this voice at different times in his stand-up, and I believe it's the same accent for the "two wild and crazy guys" routine he used to do with Dan Aykroyd on SNL years ago. This fact further cemented itself when I saw the Dexter episode where he leaves the French tape on all night while he slept, and it skipped, leaving him only able to say "omelette du fromage" ad nauseum throughout the episode. Steve did a joke in his stand-up about taking French and only retaining "omelette du fromage", going to France and basically saying the same phrase to everyone he met. He repeated it many times throughout the joke. Lvillealumni 02:00, 6 May 2007 (UTC)

Would it be okay?

Sure, the article was getting a bit cluttered, just a few minor details (oh, and I advise renaming the article to List of characters in Dexter's Laboratory, just for consistency). —May the Edit be with you, always. (T-borg) (drop me a line) 19:59, 14 May 2007 (UTC)

Hey, ho, let's go

Is there any way to verify if Dee Dee's name is a reference to Dee Dee Ramone from the Ramones? Maybe it's just me, but I've never heard the name Dee Dee apart from these two occasions. I guess it would be pretty much in line with the cultural references.

It's been used before, but it's sometimes spelled as Didi. I believe it was used for a character on Rugrats. DacknotRick 01:40, 21 June 2007 (UTC)

Powerpuff girls reference

In the episode "Baby sitter blues" Lisa the babysitter refered to jef as "Fuzzy lumpkins" I think this should be added to the article.Supah kid 17:48, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

It's not really a reference if she was using it as a pet name and that episode came out before The Powerpuff Girls aired so, no it's not a PPG reference.

DVD?

It seems to me there is some fan interest in this series & it's possible availability on DVD. I would like to see a future mention of this topic on the article page.

Dexter's Name

I have removed the following sentence from the "Premise" section of the article: "His name forms the root of the word dexterous, meaning one who is mentally adroit and skillful with the hands. (It could also refer to the common insult of 'Point Dexter', usually said to those whos intellect is higher than others)" which is unsourced and poorly written, and suggests to me "original research".

"Dexterous" does not mean "mentally adroit" (the wiktionary article linked to even affirms this), and "point dexter", which gets a small number of google hits, seems like a misheard version of "poindexter". If anyone can find a source for any of the statements in the removed section, I encourage them to add it back in. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.158.49.190 (talk) 15:22, 22 July 2008 (UTC)

  • While it's completely fine to use brackets for dates, "voiced by"s, and perhaps "e.g."s, they shouldn't be used in other ways (unencyclopedic) as found throughout the article, including the production section - easily fixable.
  • MOS:PUNCTFOOT#Punctuation_and_footnotes: "The new episodes, which ran for two more seasons, had a different production team than the originals since Genndy Tartakovsky was busy working on Samurai Jack[2] and Star Wars: Clone Wars[21] (MacFarlane and Hartman had left Time Warner altogether at this point, focusing on Family Guy[12] and The Fairly OddParents,[13] respectively)." => " The new episodes, which ran for two more seasons, had a different production team than the originals since Genndy Tartakovsky was busy working on Samurai Jack and Star Wars: Clone Wars.[2][21]. MacFarlane and Hartman had left Time Warner altogether at this point, focusing on Family Guy and The Fairly OddParents, respectively.[12][13]"
  • "... It features Dexter's family, alongside many of the recurring characters from the Dexter universe, in a battle against a monster that Dexter accidentally released from a volcano as an exchange student in Japan. In this episode Dexter was forced to reveal the lab to his parents, though it ended with their memories being wiped clear of the experience." This doesn't feel like it should be in the production section, but rather in the series overview section.
  • Coolio quote in The Hip Hop Experiment missing a reference
  • The Hip Hop Experiment section also seems to lack references for the advertisement and music videos.
  • The Source and Urb are magazines, thus should be italicized.
  • The Dexter video game section seems to lack references - of course this is easy to fix.
  • Some of the DVDs also seem to be missing references.
  • The reception section is pretty good, but there is a lack of reviews, and Dexter's surely been on more top lists then just the IGN one.

Not far off, not far off at all, just a bit if fixin' up is needed. --Khanassassin 10:42, 15 January 2013 (UTC)

Dexter VCDs

Hey guys, I was looking to improve the home video section by adding the VCD releases, but information on them is scarce. So far I've located a website in Mumbai(?) that's selling 2 season one VCDs, but I can't say whether they're official releases.[2][3] I've also found a few eBay listings with what looks like a legitimate release, although I have yet to find a reliable source or any further information about it. Then there's the Ego Trip one mentioned right in the article (and eBay). Any ideas? Paper Luigi TC 03:45, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Non-free content

I'm slightly worried by the fact that this article received a review and was passed while the non-free content banner was on the article and non-free content wasn't even mentioned by the reviewer, but there you go. Frankly, I'm concerned about all four images other than the lead. "Dial M for Monkey" has a short (uncited) paragraph, and while the details about "The Justice Friends" is longer, neither of them mention the title card. If they had their own articles, then sure, but the mere fact they exist does not mean that they need to be illustrated with non-free images. The same's true of the albums; while there is a general consensus that a single album cover image on the article about the album is acceptable, this does not extend to related articles, whether or not an album article happens to exist. J Milburn (talk) 19:32, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

"Dial M for Monkey" and "The Justice Friends" are both considered to be part of the program Dexter's Laboratory, and the shorts do overlap with each other in-universe. Fair use rationale is described as "for identification and critical commentary on the station ID or program and its contents" with the reasoning that "It is believed that this image will not limit the copyright holders ability to profit via any medium, furthermore this image is off a lower quality then original broadcast and web-resolution.". In regards to the album covers, the images are used in infoboxes for their sole entry on the entirety of Wikipedia, simply for illustrative purposes. Are you suggesting that infoboxes should never include images to illustrate media unless it has its own article? The media itself may not hold enough relevance to deserve an article, but as an encyclopedia, which its main purpose is to provide as much relevant information as possible, album covers are surely relevant to the album. yonnie (talk) 00:05, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
If, as you say, "[t]he media itself may not hold enough relevance to deserve an article", then what business have we in using its cover? NFCC#8 requires contextual significance; non-free content is used only if "its presence would significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding." Would we lose understanding of Dexter's Laboratory if we didn't have the title-screens for the in-show segments and album covers for the spinoff releases? Almost certainly not. In answer to "Are you suggesting that infoboxes should never include images to illustrate media unless it has its own article?" No, I am not. I am suggesting that infoboxes should include images only if the images themselves are significant; if the item in question has its own article, then we assume its cover is significant. If it doesn't, you're going to have to provide some further justification; was the cover choice controversial in some way? Has it been commended as a piece of artwork? Did it form part of an unusual marketting campaign? I can't see any reason why these covers would be considered significant. J Milburn (talk) 11:40, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
To be fair on the album covers, based on the conversation from NFCC, this is a case where the covers could be justified because both soundtracks are notable that they could each have their own article, where having the soundtrack image wouldn't be of any question, but the editors here have decided to cover the soundtracks within the article. I am in agreement with J Milburn that that titlecards for the show-within-a-show are typically not acceptable unless there is significant discussion about the images directly themselves. --MASEM (t) 13:46, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
Let's look at some other articles for examples. In Animaniacs, a featured article, under Animaniacs#Characters, they use File:Totallyinsaney.jpg, a screenshot from the show opening displaying characters. The section itself, is not specifically about the actual image, but is merely discussing the characters. The image is solely used to illustrate this. Another example would be The Powerpuff Girls, a good article, using both File:Powerpuff girls characters.jpg and File:PowerpuffBadmojo.JPG merely for illustrative purposes. yonnie (talk) 15:44, 17 January 2013 (UTC)
Why not remove both intro cards and replace them with a single image showing most or all of the series' characters? Paper Luigi TC 17:35, 17 January 2013 (UTC)

"Original run"

Because of the latest release of "Rude Removal," someone thought it would make sense to update the "Original run" area and display the end date as January 22, 2013. Since this is not a new episode, and is merely an old episode released to the public long after its creation, it would be inaccurate to write that the show actually ended a few days ago. It ended on November 20, 2003. 75.82.182.216 (talk) 05:56, 26 January 2013 (UTC)

Following my comments on the FAC nom, here are the pages from the book which relate to DL. Please do not link these on the article. Further, as you're citing a particular essay from an edited collection, you need the citation below.

Mako Iwamatsu and Agostino Castagnola

I think the article could benefit by mentioning somewhere the people involved in the end theme. The theme begins with a narration by Mako Iwamatsu (Enter at your own peril...) and proceeds with vocals by (I believe he's a tenor?) Agostino Castagnola (In Dexter's laboratory...), who also lent his voice to the series in "LABretto". Unfortunately, any source on Castagnola is hard to come by, but the guy does have an IMDb credit for "LABretto". Reliable sources on Mako would be easier to find, but it wouldn't seem right to add him without including Castagnola. Paper Luigi TC 19:38, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

A Few Changes and a Question

I was reading through the article and noticed a few sentences that seemed odd to me. Since the article is, for the most part, pretty well written, and since I tend to be critical of my own writing skills, I'm left unsure of whether I actually helped the article or made it worse. Feel free to revert anything you may disagree with.

Also, I have one question. The last sentence of the Overview section says that "other characters" would occasionally star in the mini-segments, then goes on to mention the Puppet Pals. Since the puppet pals are never mentioned anywhere else in the article, this could probably be confusing for readers unfamiliar with the show. I went back through the history of this page and noticed that an earlier version doesn't vaguely mention "other characters", but simply says that Dexter and Dee Dee would star in some mini-segments and that the Puppet Pals would star in other mini-segments. It then goes on to explain who the Puppet Pals are within the context of the show. Does anyone know whether the Puppet Pals were the only other characters to ever appear in these segments? --Jpcase (talk) 17:30, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

I've read your changes and have no issues with them. Major Glory and the Evil Math Magician starred in one mini-segment. All the others I remember had either Dexter and Dee Dee or (rarely) the Puppet Pals. Paper Luigi TC 07:14, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

Recent content from IPs 95.237.234.39 and 95.232.238.200

With regard to recent edits [4][5] by IPs 95.237.234.39 and 95.232.238.200 (both of which geolocate to Trieste, Italy), a few notes: 1) Per WP:ANTAGONIST We don't use protagonist/antagonist/co-protagonist/tritagonist labels. 2) The content isn't written in proper encyclopedic tone. We don't need subjective words like "cute". "We can add also that Dee Dee is a sort of damsel in distress" is not proper tone. Why are we speaking in the first person all of a sudden? The statement "Unlike many damsels in distress, she's blonde, tall, slim, has big blue eyes, long legs and arms and huge feet" is an unsourced conclusion--who says that many damsels aren't blonde or tall? There are other tone issues as well. 3) The content is not submitted with proper spacing after periods and commas, which is an eyesore and requires other editors to fix it. For these reasons I have reverted this content. The IP editor is welcome to participate in this discussion to argue for inclusion, but should not resubmit the content, as the consensus isn't there yet. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 18:44, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

Unrelated or vaguely related content

The segment about Justice Friends seems to be only vaguely related to Dexter's lab but take up a fair portion of the article. I suggest that this portion is either deleted or fleshed out to make the connection clearer. If kept, it should be rewritten as the quality is rather low. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 212.130.79.38 (talk) 16:33, 18 March 2015 (UTC)

Where the "Changes" short film originated (Cal Arts or Columbia)

I just noticed that Allan Neuwirth's book, Makin' Toons: Inside the Most Popular Animated TV Shows and Movies, claims "It was during his second year at Columbia College that Tartakovsky made a two-and-a-half minute toon called 'Changes' ". This appears to be inaccurate, since both this article from People and this CartoonNetwork.com profile on Tartakovsky claim that the film was created while Tartakovsky was at Cal Arts. Furthermore, Mike Manley's book, Best of Draw! Volume 1 includes the following exchange at the very top of pg. 136:

GT: Two years.
Draw!: That's where you came up with Dexter?
GT: Yeah, for my second year student film, I did a two-and-a-half minute version of Dexter...

Unfortunately, pg. 135 of the book isn't included in my free Google Books preview, and because Tartakovsky spent two years at each university, it's impossible to infer, based on that exchange alone, at which university Tartakovsky created the short film. But I can see a tiny snippet of pg. 135, when I type "Cal Arts" into the search bar, and the last bit of visible text is:

Draw!: Okay. So now you were at Cal Arts for two years or four...

It seems pretty safe to assume that page 136 is picking up where the excerpt from page 135 ends. So, especially when taken in concert with the People article and the Cartoon Network bio, I think we can reasonably deduce that Tartakovsky created the short film during his second year at Cal Arts. The Neuwirth book still seems like a good source though; mistakes happen even in professionally written books and one error shouldn't discredit Neuwirth. --Jpcase (talk) 17:24, 3 December 2018 (UTC)

Actually, on further inspection, I'm realizing that Neuwirth's book, in a different chapter, states: "While attending CalArts, he created the very first Dexter's Lab pencil test". So yeah, most likely, Neuwirth just made a mistake when he said that "Changes" was made at Columbia. --Jpcase (talk) 17:43, 3 December 2018 (UTC)
Also, this interview with Tartakovsky, from the Times of Northwest Indiana, provides even more confirmation in the following exchange that the short film was created at Cal Arts:
9. Is it true Dexter was born from a homework assignment at Cal Arts?
A. Yeah. I was animating a girl dancing and she basically looked like Dee Dee. I thought, "I really like her. What's she going to do? Maybe she has a little brother. She's all about art and fun and dance. He'll be short and blocky and he's about science. Then he'll have a secret lab and she's always sneaking in it to bother him." Dee Dee came first. She was really the star of the show to me. She was so much fun. Later on, I started on Dexter and he took over.
--Jpcase (talk) 14:43, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

Reddit as a source

I just added this link to a Reddit AMA conducted by Tartakovsky as a source. It should be acceptable, per WP:SOCIALMEDIA, which states that under certain conditions, "Self-published and questionable sources may be used as sources of information about themselves, usually in articles about themselves or their activities". The text goes on to state that this policy applies to Reddit. --Jpcase (talk) 16:00, 5 December 2018 (UTC)

Reboot

I want a reboot of Dexter's Laboratory. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Moviemagic2 (talkcontribs) 05:13, 22 February 2021 (UTC)

Number of pilots

As far as I'm aware, Dexter's Laboratory only had two pilots - "Changes" and "The Big Sister". Those are the only pilots mentioned in this article's Production section, but in this September edit (and in the subsequent edit) the article was revised to state that there were four pilots. List of Dexter's Laboratory episodes was also edited in September, by the same editor, to say that there were four pilots, instead of two. Does anyone know for certain how many pilots the show had? I'm assuming that the correct number is two, but I'm not entirely sure. --Jpcase (talk) 17:37, 8 December 2019 (UTC)

I am too young to remember this, but the contemporary news articles I've read about the series pilots have mentioned that four episodes originally aired on TNT and not Cartoon Network. — Paper Luigi TC 03:14, 23 February 2021 (UTC)
