Diego Ruíz (footballer)Diego Ruiz (footballer) – In Spanish, Ruiz doesn't have accent mark. Vivaelcelta {talk  · contributions} 12:10, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • If 'Ruiz/Ruíz' doesn't have the accent mark in Spanish, can somebody please explain Enzo Ruíz and Iván Ruíz? Are those also incorrect? If so then I would support this suggested move. GiantSnowman 13:52, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
User:GiantSnowman, I was just discussing Iván Ruíz with Vivaelcelta - it seems to be particularly prevalent to add an unneeded accent to Ruiz in Cuban sources, no conclusion but perhaps the Cuban sports press doesn't follow Spanish accentation rules? The more bizarre thing is the photo in the Iván Ruíz article... In ictu oculi (talk) 14:59, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It does seem odd, is there any reason why Argentines and Cubans might pronounce "Rúiz" if the accent on "í" was left off (which it should be in Spain). Looks more like a journalistic typo. In ictu oculi (talk) 15:02, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I only ask because this guy is also Argentine... GiantSnowman 15:13, 13 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. As an aside to In ictu oculi, GiantSnowman and Vivaelcelta, I know that there is never a legitimate reason in any Spanish dialect to accentuate "Ruiz" (unless you were saying "Rúiz" smile in which case it'd need the accent), but people sometimes do make mistakes and hyper-correct/overaccentuate words and I'd bet that's what's happening here. (It's not supremely uncommon in my experience to see "Lópes" or "Hernándes", etc.; these are errors since Spanish's rules would lead a speaker to stress those vowels anyway, but they happen!) I can say with well north of 99% confidence: no "proper" variety of Spanish ever, ever has its own rules for accenting words. (The reason some Mexicans write "futbol" without the accent is that they actually say futBOL.) Red Slash 03:12, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support In trust of those above with a better understanding of Spanish than I. benmoore 17:30, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
