Was he a qualified pilot?[edit]

As I understand it enlisted never actually fly planes. In the article is says he served as a flight instructor, and also he "made" over 400 carrier landings. Did it mean to say he "participated" in carrier landings, and "instructed" students who were going to become pilots?
