Dunford[edit]

Moved from User talk:DBigXray

I'm not sure your move of Dunford, South Yorkshire to "Dunford" was entirely uncontroversial. Dunford is also a surname (I should know!) so Dunford should perhaps be a disambiguation page with links to the village and to people with this surname (David Dunford [not me!], Jason Dunford, Joseph Dunford, Nelson Dunford, et al.). I'd be happy to populate it. Dave.Dunford (talk) 16:56, 13 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dave.Dunford, thanks for your your kind message. This move that I made was requested by @Crouch, Swale: at WP:RMT and you can see his justification. IMHO You have made a good suggestion. Lets see what Crouch has to say, and then we can see how to proceed on your suggestion. Regards. --DBigXray 19:12, 13 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Dave.Dunford: Dunford was just a redirect to Dunford, South Yorkshire (since its creation in 2007) so this was just removing unnecessary disambiguation, unless we have content for the surname or the surname holders are commonly known as "Dunford" its not ambiguous. Indeed no one had created a disambiguation or surname article but if you think one should exist, then you could move it back and create an article/DAB page at Dunford. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:47, 13 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Crouch, Swale: Fair enough – let's leave it be. I was just going by other surnames that are also places (e.g. Hollins), but on reflection, these are usually multiple places with the same name and I'm not aware of any other Dunford places. Your point about the lack of a surname-holder known commonly just as "Dunford" is a valid one, and (unlike some surnames) it isn't commonly used as a first name. Dave.Dunford (talk)
@Dave.Dunford: There is coverage here so you could create an article at Dunford (surname) and link to the people at the surname article. In that case we could just add a hatnote to the surname from Dunford or move it back to Dunford, South Yorkshire and create a DAB at Dunford listing both the place and surname. Indeed SurnameDB does also refer to Dunford House in Methley, there is a farm in Norfolk and a few other small places. The reason why it was uncontroversial is that we don't redirect "Foo" to "Foo, Qualifier" (or "Foo (qualifier)", if this is the case the qualified article should either moved in its place or "Foo" become a DAB. It does look like Dunford may after all require disambiguation. Crouch, Swale (talk) 19:56, 13 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Dave.Dunford, @Crouch, Swale: Thanks a lot for sharing your views. good to see we could agree on the current status with plans for future. I will be copy pasting this thread on the Talk:Dunford for folks to refer to this discussion. Any further conversation can happen there. thanks. --DBigXray 18:35, 14 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
