Changes[edit]

I'm changing a few things in the article First, the info box shows Dwight Lauderdale's birth place as Columbus, Ohio. NOt correct, per the source it was a "Suburb of Columbus, Ohio". Second, one sentance has been mangled in " Career", it's just one word, but it needs to be changed in order for the sentance to be grammatical. (It's the sentance "He didn't had to drop the school to accept the work. "). — Kosh Jumpgate 13:42, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't coming from a suburb the same as coming from the city? I am from a suburb of Manchester in the UK -- if anyone asks me where I am from, "Manchester" is my reply. As for the mangled sentence, I am not sure it's even necessary. – ukexpat (talk) 15:05, 31 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, a suburb of Manchester is not Manchester. Sure, you could informally say you're from Manchester, no problem there, but since every claim needs to be verified and since the source here says Dwight Lauderdale is from a suburb of Columbus and not actually Columbus itself, stating that he is from COlumbus is stating something not sourced and it could be considered OR. As for the mangled sentance, it was a minor fix for grammar's sake. :)

A few ideas/suggestions[edit]

As someone who has witnessed the recent cat fight regarding this article, I have a few constructive suggestions as the hassle has not resulted in an improved article on someone who was a Miami broadcast journalist for 40 years (I have tagged two most outstanding problems - please do not assume that I am taking the side of either combatant).

  1. Birthplaces don't belong in the lede, which is supposed to be a summary of who Dwight Lauderdale is and what makes him notable (thousands are born in the Columbus, Ohio, area every year - that is not part of his notability.
  2. Don't waffle in stating "a suburb of ###" when mentioning his birthplace. In what specific city was he born? If this cannot be answered, perhaps it's not significant enough to be mentioned in the first place.
  3. De-emphasize Columbus (in which he started his career); emphasize Miami (in which both WCKT - now WSVN - and WPLG have been located throughout his career) as he is more tightly identified with the city than with the more general "South Florida", which extends roughly 200 miles from Fort Lauderdale (no relation) to Key West.
  4. As currently presented in the article, his Lasik surgery appears to be more significant than his 34 years in front of the camera and 23 years as a news anchor for WPLG. This violates WP:UNDUE as he was notable for much more than that.
  5. What was his last day on the air? There's no mention - just his announcement of his departure. What is he doing now, fishing with Don Noe?
  6. The mention of his replacement is irrelevant to the article as Charles Perez has not achieved national notability, which also means...
  7. What makes Dwight Lauderdale a notable person on a national (or international) level? Is there any coverage of him outside of South Florida? The further from Miami, the better to establish his notability as most local television news anchors do not meet WP:BIO.

I hope this helps - I remember his first days at WPLG and the day he replaced Mike Schneider in the seat next to Ann Bishop (a.k.a. Harriet Himes), but, unfortunately, adding my memories would be violating WP:NOR. While he is of great importance in the local market, we must never forget that Wikipedia readership is global in nature, and the article should acknowledge it. B. Wind, I totally agree! (Granted I was one of the parties actually involved in the catfight ! :) What it comes down to is, what I posted originally was based on the verifiable references that I could find on the internet (excluding any blogs, "Typepad (it's a blog)", forums...etc....) I couldn't find a specific reference for exactly what town he was born in. The closest I got was "A suburb on.....". Granted, I'm biased as hell because I started the article, but I liked the original version because more information was available on Dwight Lauderdale, and it gave readers a chance to get into his head. I'll look to see if I can find a verifiable refernce for his last day. As far as notabillity outside of Florida, note his NATAS award, the "N" is "National"! As far as Columbus, he started there, biographies of any kind usually note a start of somekind for the person in question.
