First Creation[edit]

The official title of Ralph the Staller was Earl of East Anglia rather than Earl of Norfolk and Suffolk, which indicates that the first creation was not in 1070, but rather in 1141. Any sources or references would be appreciated. Mugsalot (talk) 21:58, 13 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The House of Lords in 1906[edit]

I've read that in 1906 the Committee for Privileges of the House of Lords ruled that the 24th baron Mowbray had no right to the title of earl of Norfolk. In 1302 Roger of Bigod ceded the earldom to the crown; the earldom was then conferred to Thomas of Brotherton, from whom the then baron Mowbray descended. The duke of Norfolk opposed his claim. The committee declared that the cession made by Roger of Bigod had been null and void.
