Issues

This page needs lots of clean up. It is basically a long list of lists. It also reeks of boosterism. --Thunder 15:11, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

It also fails to explain what "East Carolina" even means. And there's no disambiguation in case someone creates a page for that term. 12.107.67.3 14:58, 12 December 2006 (UTC)

ack.. small font.. hard to see. Pulseczar 12:28, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

hmm.. gone now.. must have been a fluke, as I see no one has editted it since I wrote that a minute ago. Pulseczar 12:30, 19 December 2006 (UTC)

Sources and cleanup

There appears to be a lack of citation to the information contained in this article. Sections needing citation and cleanup include: Main Campus Statistics, Research/University Facts, History, Future of East Carolina, Student Demographics, Greek Life, Alumni Association and Notable Alumni, Athletics, Traditions and Events, Administration.

I'll try to sit down and contribute to these sections and give them a unified layout with other Universities while utilizing the Manual of Style

Added a notes section and the ability to use the <ref> tag for future citation of material

The East Carolinian

The East Carolinian is a newspaper that is independent of the university. While students run it, it is not funded by the university. I see no problem with there being a link to it on the university's wiki page, there is no need to merge the two, as other university papers are not merged with their respective universities either. And I say all of this as a member of the paper's editorial board. Liz 06:35, 2 January 2007 (UTC)

Is the citing problem fixed?

I went through and corrected any non-cited numbers and facts. Is their any other place that needs to be cited? also is there a better place to put the ref cite than on the headline? if so please fix or tell me how to fix it. thanx —The preceding unsigned comment was added by PGPirate (talkcontribs) 01:33, 4 January 2007 (UTC).

What does the "ECU umbrella" need next?

I am an contributer to all thing ECU. What articles needs to be created or expanded upon? I am thinking a "History of East Carolina University" next. Any other ideas?

Failed GA because: not enough refs and they need standard format, the lead does not summarize the article adequately, and too listy.Rlevse 01:43, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

GA comment

After a quick review of the article, it needs fair use rationales for the logos, reformatting of the citations, and the inline citations go directly after the punctuation. I'd recommend fixing these, or the article may be failed. --Nehrams2020 09:02, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

On hold, it has a few issues that need to be addressed. Though the formatting of the references isn't too pretty, that really isn't something for which I can exclusively denounce the article. After the lead, the article is composed entirely of lists, some of these sections need to be converted to prose in some fashion. See also Wikipedia:WikiProject Universities. 7. Overall:
    a Pass/Fail:

This is the third nomination. The first two listed the same legitimate issues and they have not been addressed. For this reason, it has been failed. Once the below issues have been addressed, the article can be renominated, but not before.

Issues

  • Are there no controversies that could be mentioned, to achieve "NPOV" and "all views".
    • I don't know any controversies that could be mentioned, nothing Wikipedia worthy. PGPirate 16:25, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
  • Typically stand-alone years should not be wikified, although it is up to the writing editor. However, considering stand-alone years aren't consistently wikified throughout the article, I recommend removed the bracket from all stand-alone years. Done
  • Wikification of words needs only be done for words relevant to the topic and only in their first appearance. Brody School of Medicine is, for example, wikified in each of its many appearances. It should be wikified in the lead only and not again. Ensure this is true for all wikified words in the article... first appearance only. Done
  • Remove dead links that aren't relevant to the topic. Done
  • Only the first word in headers should be capitalized (per WP:MOS#Wording) unless the word is proper. In the case of Campus sub-headers, they don't even need to contain the word campus. Simply "Main", "Health Sciences/Pitt County Memorial Hospital", etc. "Colleges and Schools" → "Colleges and schools". "Greek Life" → "Greek life". Done

May 7 Update

  • These issues still need to be addressed. Done

Lead

  • First paragraph
    • I recommend removing the information about where the name derived from. It's kind of self-explanatory that it's located in Eastern North Carolina. Additionally, the article cited as the reference for this statement says nothing about it. As for the "is considered the flagship of Eastern North Carolina" statement; it sounds good, but if you can't find a reference it needs to go. Done
    • Raleigh needs to become Raleigh, North Carolina.
    • "The University is home to many colleges..." This sentence needs to be moved down to be the first of the second paragraph.
  • Second paragraph
    • The lead should be a summary of the article, here new information is introduced into the article that is not expanded upon in the body. This information needs to be worked into the article and removed from the lead. Done
  • Third paragraph
    • This information is detailed in the infobox and is therefore not necessary to be included in the lead. To mention it is the largest university in NC is good, but it needs to be worked into an appropriate place in the lead (first paragraph) and adequately sourced. Done

May 7 Update

  • Now the lead is a bit short. Something to discuss once other issues are resolved.
    • I agree - This needs to be expanded to meet WP:LEAD length requirements. It should also summary the article having at least a sentence on each major heading. I don't think the article is quite there in this regard. Morphh (talk) 23:42, 23 June 2007 (UTC)

History

  • First paragraph
    • "AN ACT TO STIMULATE HIGH SCHOOL INSTRUCTION IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS OF THE STATE AND TEACHER TRAINING" → An Act to Stimulate High School Instruction in the Public Schools of the State and Teacher Training. Done
    • If he went by T.J., his name should be written out as "Thomas Jordan (T.J.) Jarvis" in it's first appearance, then "T.J. Jarvis" in subsequent appearances (see Main campus). Done
    • '"Father of ECU,"' → '"father of ECU",'.
    • "Although its purpose was to train "young white men and women," there ..." Move the comma to the outside of the quotation per WP:MOS#Quotations which states the punctuation only goes inside the quotes when it is a complete quote. Done
  • Future of East Carolina
    • If "sand / beach" must be formatted like this, at least take the spaces out... sand/beach. Done
    • Further references for the details of the project. Done Although, I was hoping for a non-ECU site link. News releases are better, however.

May 7 Update

  • "father of ECU," needs to become "father of ECU", <- puntuation goes outside of quotations unless it is a full quotation. Example: "She said it was pretty." - She said it was "pretty".. Done

Campus

  • Main campus
    • T.J. Jarvis was an ambassador to Brazil? Fascinating. Reference it. Also, ambassador should be lower case per Wp:mos#Titles. Only capitalize when used as a title (followed by a name). Done
    • This paragraph also needs to be reworded for better flow. Fewer periods, more commas.
  • Health Sciences Campus/Pitt County Memorial Hospital
    • "The Health Science Campus is situated at and near Pitt County Memorial Hospital(PCMH). Pitt County Memorial Hospital is ..." How is it at and near at the same time? Explain. Also space between "Hospital" and "(PCMH)". Pitt County Memorial Hospital (after the period) → PCMH. You put it in parenthesis for a reason. Done
    • "The area is about 2 miles west of Main Campus on 205 acres (0.8 km² with nearly 950,000 square feet of academic and research space in thirty-nine buildings." There is an opening parenthesis, but not a closing one.
  • Libraries
    • Wikify microform. Done
    • "The Music Library is located on the 1st floor of A.J. Fletcher Music Center." Change "The Music Library" to "It". Done
    • "Lastly, there is theLaupus Library." There needs to be a space between "the" and "Laupus". Done
    • "158,457 volumes (print & non-print) and 8,712 current print, nonprint, & electronic serial titles".Not typically something that would be quoted. Remove quotation marks and change the "&" to "and".
  • Mattamuskeet Field Station
    • What is that? Done I thinkPGPirate 15:56, 27 May 2007 (UTC)

May 7 Update

  • The paragraph about the architecture still needs rewriting. Something to focus on later.
  • Under libraries, there is still an & that needs to be changed to "and". Also, "nonprint" needs to become "non-print". I missed that during my first review. Done
  • "The main goal of the Field Station main goal is..."  Done
    • I still don't know what it is. A remote classroom or what? Done
    • "The main goal of the ... main goal". That needs to be fixed. Done
    • Not something you'd normally quote. Remove quotations. Done

Colleges and Schools

  • Avoid sandwiching text between images. In this case, between and image and a table. One of the two needs to be relocated. Done
    • Deleted table, didnt think it was GA qualityPGPirate 15:55, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
  • A reference for the second sentence would be good. Done
  • Each school should have its own paragraph. Having all seven together is much to long for one. Done

May 7 Update

  • "The college has its roots in the beginning of the University. This college housed the core of the classes needed for a teacher at that time." That needs to be reworded. Done

Greek Life

  • Spell out numbers under 10. Done
  • "National Pan-Hellenic Council(NPHC)" Space between "Council" and "(NPHC)". Done
  • "There are also many Service and Honorary Fraternities and Sororities." Unnecessary capitalization. Done
  • References. Done

Alumni Association and notable alumni

  • "A national Alumni Board of Directors, comprised of fifteen members..." Spell out numbers under 10, use numbers for those over 10. Done
  • "Ambassadors" → "ambassadors".
    • Their official name is ECU Ambassadors, is this ok? PGPirate 15:44, 27 May 2007 (UTC)
      • Per WP:MOS#titles it should only be capitalized when followed by a name. If you feel this is an exception, leave it as you like it. LaraLoveT/C 04:43, 1 June 2007 (UTC)
  • "ECU alumni have impacted North Carolinians in many ways." Reads like personal opinion. Not encyclopedic.. Done
  • References. Done

Athletics

  • First paragraph
    • Reference second half. Done
  • Second paragraph
  • Third paragraph
    • Unnecessary information on coaches. They have their own articles, no need to list the year from which they started. Better format would be to simply state, "The current coaches are...".

Administration

  • "The current Chancellor is Dr. Steven Ballard. He has been Chancellor since June 1, 2004, when he replaced Interim Chancellor Dr. William Shelton." → "The current chancellor, Dr. Steven Ballard, has been in place since replacing Dr. William Shelton on June 1, 2004." Done
  • "There have been six Presidents and seven Chancellors." → "There have been six presidents and seven chancellors." Done
  • "The Chancellor has to..." → "The chancellor has to...". Done

May 7 Update

  • I just realized the "Interim" title. If you wanted to re-place "Interim Chancellor" in front of Dr. William Shelton, that would be appropriate. Capitalization in place as it is being used as his formal title. Done

References

  • Citation templates need to be used for all sources and completely filled in, as applicable.
  • Books, magazines, newspapers, PDF files, etc. need page specifications in the citaion.
  • Relying too heavily on the website of the topic is not appropriate.
  • When using one source multiple time, name the source (see WP:CITE) so that it only appears on the list once.
Let me know if you have questions.

1. Specify page number.
2. Need more specific link.
3. I can't get this link to load.
4. Don't see the necessity in citing another Wikipedia article when you have a reliable, third-party reference.
7. This article states nothing concerning the statement for which it is the reference.
8. I don't see where this references College of Education.
9. I don't see it in this reference either. Additionally, the website of the topic is not considered a reliable source for these sorts of claims. The original source needs to be cited. If Such and such stated they were the top of whatever, we need the link to Such and such's page stating this or the details of where this information is published.
13. Is a reference to the Brazilian ambassador statement. It also needs to be moved behind the statement for which it is the reference as opposed to be clumped at the end of the sentence with all references.
14. Needs to be moved to be after the statement for which it is the reference.
16. Doesn't state there were no male graduates before. It says "mostly" when stating previous males took only one or two "special" courses. Time line also says nothing about this.
17 - 20 are the same reference. Needs to be named. Will appear on list as 17a, b, c, d
18. Needs to be moved to be after the statement for which it is the reference. As it stands it appears to be the reference for "...its first bachelor's degrees were awarded the following year." Which is not listed in the time line.
23. Page specification.

... I'm noticing a lot of reliance on the school website. There should be more reference to third-party sources, less to the website of the topic. There are further issues with the remaining references, however I have gone through all I can right now. If progress is made with the previous issues, I'll review the rest at a later time.

May 7 Update The first reference looks great, but it still needs a page number.

Images

  • Image:NC-Congress-ThomasJordanJarvis.jpg has a deprecated tag. Done
    • I believe {{PD-USGov}} is the appropriate tag considering where you got the image from. Done
  • May want to consider staggering the images in the second half of the article. Done

May 7 Update

Good work so far. There are still some issues, as noted above, but it is coming along. Let me know if you have any questions. I'll keep an eye on the progress and comment accordingly, and when I have some extra time, I'll help out with formatting the references. --LaraLoveTalk/Contribs 15:55, 7 May 2007 (UTC)

Information removed temporarily due to lack of citation

Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Expansion
Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium is in the beginning process of expansion. Thirty-five hundred seats will be added to the East side (endzone) prior to the 2009 season. The new addition will be constructed for easy addition of 3,500 more seats at a later date. On the south side a new press box and office complex will be built. The total height will be about six stories, with a two-story press box, luxury suite level, academic space and the football offices.

Also, information about Society of the Seven. These items should not be put back into the article until proper references are found. Thanks, PGPirate 02:01, 14 February 2008 (UTC)

  • The Society of the Seven article has been deleted for lack of sources, so I second this. We need reliable third-party sources. Those which had been added were considered insufficient for that article and so the same surely applies here. Artichoke2020 (talk) 00:13, 11 May 2008 (UTC)
  • Removed references to secret societies as no one has been able to provide references that they are anything more than hoaxes in many, many AFD debates. 152.2.133.109 (talk) 15:02, 30 May 2008 (UTC)
    • The Society of Seven does exist, if only historically. But until their is a proper citation, it cannot be included. The Order of the Cupola is a donor society for people who have donated significantly to the school. Again it cannot be included until citation occurs. PGPirate 22:46, 30 May 2008 (UTC)

Conflicting information

In the header it states ECU is the third largest university in North Carolina, but in the history section it states ECU is the second largest university in NC. Which is it? Hobga (talk) 18:17, 10 November 2009 (UTC)

  • Fixed. ECU is the third largest in total enrollment, but second in undergraduate. PGPirate 01:54, 13 November 2009 (UTC)

What should I do?

Don't panic; a discussion will now take place over on Commons about whether to remove the file. This gives you an opportunity to contest the deletion, although please review Commons guidelines before doing so.

This organization is not notable enough to have it's own separate article. It lacks sources and the people listed lack WP:BIO. Corkythehornetfan (Talk) 21:54, 14 November 2014 (UTC)

It's notable enough to be in many unaffiliated news outlets all the freakin time.--150.216.254.207 (talk) 23:20, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
Just because it is in some newspapers, doesn't mean it is notable enough for Wikipedia. This article doesn't have enough reliable sources, the people that are being added don't meet WP:BIO and a majority of the content is unsourced. Plus adding stuff like this or stuff that is in the Controversies section like #REKT or in the history section when SEX is in all caps. Stuff like this doesn't meet Wikipedia guidelines. I would either suggest that it gets merged into the ECU article, or it gets nominated for deletion. Corkythehornetfan (Talk) 23:51, 14 November 2014 (UTC)
  • Redirect - There is really nothing to merge as nothing of consequence is independently sourced). The vast majority of the article was nearly incoherent rambling, rumors about past members (WP:BLP issues in some cases) and such. If the user wants to document this kind of stuff, a blog might be a good choice. A website specifically dedicated to the East Carolina University Student Government Association would take more work; presumably they'd want it to be coherent. In any case, unless significant coverage in independent reliable sources, a redirect is clearly in order. - SummerPhD (talk) 01:57, 15 November 2014 (UTC)
The redirect sounds soo much better, never even gave it a thought! I'm game for it. Corkythehornetfan (Talk) 03:04, 15 November 2014 (UTC)

Party School

Someone probably should add something about this place`s reputation as a party school...I`m not going to do it because I know what it will lead to..I`ve never met a student that went here who didn`t say they`re majors weren`t drugs, drinking, and sex...I understand that`s college campuses everywhere in the US these days but ECU has a definite reputation for being extreme regarding this..I know it will never be let into the article but it`s the truth..I`ve met a lot of ECU students over the years and they all said the same thing..they barely passed NC public high school...got into ECU because mom and dad could pay for it..generally never cracked a book and only went there to have a good time....I know the truth hurts sometimes...live with it. 66.191.216.112 (talk) 02:13, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

Suggested improvements

I read through the article. I think the prose needs quite a bit of work before it will be up to FA status. The sentences seem to be either short and stubby or very long and unwieldy. Overall, it doesn't flow that well. Other suggestions follow:

    • I've never heard of a university described as an "intensive research university". What does that mean?
      • Intensive was a classification by the Carnegie Classification. Now is not used. ECU is now a doctoral/research university - PGPirate 03:24, 20 February 2008 (UTC)
    • Need nonbreaking spaces between numbers and their units/qualifiers (25,990 students, its)
    • Need wikilinks for full dates
    • This sentence is a little clunky- " In early August 2007, it was announced that the North Carolina General Assembly had approved and Governor Mike Easley had signed the budget including $25 Million for a new School of Dentistry at ECU with the first students expected no later than 2011."
    • "The students have an active social life." - This sentence probably needs to be removed. It would be impossible to prove that all students have an active social life, and it's likely that some students don't.
    • A lot of the prose is in passive tense; if possible, please switch to active tense. For example, the first sentence of history section would be much more understandable if it were not in passive tense.
      • I have tried to rewrite this first sentence. Maybe it reads better? --W4otn (talk) 15:00, 24 February 2023 (UTC)
    • Need a citation for this: "Today, ECU is the third-largest university in North Carolina with 18,587 undergraduates and 5,764 graduates, including the 290 Brody School of Medicine students"
    • It seems a little odd to have a section called "Future of East Carolina" in the midst of the History section. (also, the article title shouldn't be repeated in the section headings)
    • Image captions shouldn't end with periods unless they are full sentences.
    • Need citations for facts in the Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium Expansion section (and sentences that begin with numbers should have the numbers written out)
    • "will be completed in 2007" - it's now 2008, so this needs to be updated
    • Is geteducated.com a reliable source? I question whether its ranking should be included in the article at all.
      • Its on the front page of the College of Business webpage; [1]
    • Need citations for much of the facts in Greek life section:

"The majority are located off or near 5th Street or 10th Street. Of the 16 social fraternities, seven currently do not own a house. Greek life started in 1958 with the introduction of four social fraternities: Kappa Alpha Order, Lambda Chi Alpha, Pi Kappa Alpha, and Theta Chi. Two years later, eight of the nine social sororities were founded.:

    • I would add wikilinks for NCAA Division IA and Conference USA
    • "Pirates" does not need ot be in italics
    • There is a citation needed tag after a sentence in Traditions and Events
