Why Not Charles Elliot Loughlin?[edit]

Why was the Admiral's first name lost? I'd be happy to work on this page, but I don't know how to fix that ;-0 JMOprof (talk) 18:56, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We don't always know the origins of why people were called what they were, but per all reliable sources it's been the common name of Elliott Loughlin. Anything that's mentioned his full name has been out of formality only. Jrcla2 (talk) 20:30, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok. Elliott is what Clair Blair first calls him, so I'll concede the point. Things I'll fix: He was a LT on USS New Mexico, not CO, serving under Rickover. A Gold Star is in lieu of a second award, which really means he was awarded 2 LOMs. He was courtmartialed for the Awa Maru sinking, yet rose to Admiral. Nimitz and King wanted his hide. Worthy of comment. Thanks. JMOprof (talk) 20:50, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you can correct/expand this article (with citations!) to get it to be at least 1,500 characters long, I'll be happy to go in on a joint-DYK nomination with you. Jrcla2 (talk) 20:52, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I ought to be able to get it to about the same as Maurice H. Rindskopf pretty quickly. The Awa Maru story is 4 pages in Blair. I'll build a sandbox and get back with pointer.JMOprof (talk) 13:53, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ok great. By the way, I created the article yesterday (January 9th) and for it to qualify for DYK, it must be ready to nominate within 5 days of its creation. Just a heads up so you know what kind of time frame you're working with. Jrcla2 (talk) 13:59, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sandbox is here: User:JMOprof/Charles_E._Loughlin. Counting on you for the common name ref ☺ This was on my personal list to do, so you just gave me a kick start. JMOprof (talk) 14:17, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Why create a sandbox? I would say just edit the article itself, that way it shows the history and it can be more easily verified what edits were made and by whom. As for the common name, it's based off a search for Elliott Loughlin versus Charles Loughlin, plus any combination of Navy, basketball and/or Midshipmen. This link from Navy's basketball website explicitly calls him "Elliott Loughlin" for instance. Jrcla2 (talk) 14:21, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, the sandbox is up. Plz take a gander, and then I'll copy over if you have no objections/suggestions. I can't support (or Hall of Valor doesn't support) 2 silver stars. I presume you have a ref. The Awa Maru page needs some help, as does the Academy graduate page. (Doesn't have Slade Cutter) JMOprof (talk) 19:35, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I just made some copyedits and corrections on your sandbox page. I'm not sure where I originally thought he had gotten two Silver Stars, so I changed it to one. At this point I'd say feel free to copy/pasted the sandbox article over the current one. Jrcla2 (talk) 20:03, 10 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hospital ship?[edit]

Awa Maru during this round was just POW supply carrier and at the time of sinking, she even didn't carry POW supply, but - according to Blair's 'Silent Victory' - hundreds of bales of row rubber and about 1,700 passengers, mostly merchant ship captains, mates, engineers, and seamen, plus some government officials. So, she was not a hospital ship. Her safe-conduct was granted by US Department of State, but white crosses plastered on both sides, does not mean hospital ship always. Why she's called hospital ship in this article? --Matrek (talk) 19:14, 24 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
