Clarification in lede[edit]

Elphaba does not, in fact, have a last name in the book of the musical, does she? The lede is phrased to suggest that the last name is mentioned, but *I* don't remember hearing it. --Baylink 00:05, 8 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, after 'One Short Day', the wizard acts Elphaba and Glinda to introduce themselves. Elphaba screeched something along the lines of: 'My name is Elphaba Thropp'....

Wicked summaries[edit]

I think it's fine to have a bit of a summary in regards to what happens to Elphaba in the Wicked novel and musical, but I'm not sure it's necessary to completely retell the plots of both, seeing as this article is supposed to be about Elphaba, not the works themselves. Both of the novel and musical have their own respective articles, so the extensive retelling-of-plot should be kept to those pages. Let me know what you think. Elphaba's sex organs[edit]

There is no comment on the page about Elphaba's sexual organs (being scarred or perhaps hermaphroditic), despite all the attention paid to them in the book such as: the discussion in the intro, the uncertainty at birth, Fiyero not being allowed to see them, her own discussion on her gender (I think this occurred while still in school) and perhaps there are more instances. I think this is an important part of her identity, and part of one of the overall themes of the book. Page name[edit]

It's up for debate, because I think the use of "Thropp" as an actual surname is only in the musical, not in the novel (which, being the original work, I think would take superiority?). Alex (talk) 10:29, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

She's referred to as "Elphaba Thropp" a few times in Wicked (though it's usually in the context of "Third Thropp Descending", meaning it could be a title rather than a last name), but she's called Thropp many, many times in Son of a Witch. --UsaSatsui (talk) 16:54, 28 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mexico Cast Member[edit]

I have deleted the Mexican entry in the cast list for Elphaba. I haven't heard about a Wicked opening in Mexico but even if there is, it certainly won't have been confirmed yet. Cast Replacement Information[edit]

Japanese names[edit]

I think their "Christian" names should come first, because the article is in English, and it could cause some confusion. Because the article is English, we should conform it to fit our culture. Cast lists[edit]

This section looks ridiculous currently. It's messy, there are some spelling errors, numerous understudies/standbys are missing from productions, and it looks really stupid to divide the cast list by production, because so many performers have been used in other productions. If this section IS needed (which I question), I say that there should be two sections, one listing past performers and the productions in which they appeared (in order) in parentheses, and another listing current performers and the productions in which they are currently appearing. Example: Current Performers

Nicole Parker (current Broadway)
Jennifer DiNoia (Chicago understudy, final Chicago standby, current Broadway standby)
Maria Eberline (original 1st national tour understudy, current Broadway understudy)

Past Performers

Shoshana Bean (Broadway standby, Broadway, 1st national tour)
Kristy Cates (original Broadway understudy, temporary 1st national tour, original Chicago standby, Chicago)
Eden Espinosa (original Broadway standby, temporary 1st national tour, Broadway, original LA, final LA)
Idina Menzel (workshops, San Francisco tryouts, original Broadway, original London)

...and so on.

Another beef I have with this section is the constant capitalization (which, I'm sorry, looks RIDICULOUS), as well as the need to arrange the "Former" list by production. I think that the individual actresses that have played or are currently playing Elphaba SHOULD be listed on this article as long as there is sufficient information to back it up. Unconfirmed and rumored castings should never be considered and high school casts should never be listed here. Within the continuity of Maguire's books and the musical, yes. However, the characters are sufficiently distinct that it makes sense to keep the articles separate; the figure of the Wicked Witch of the West has nearly a century of literary and cultural history prior to Maguire's revisionism, and Elphaba (of the books and the musical) is notable in her own right. It's a bit like Zeus and Jupiter; in narrative terms, and to a Roman like Virgil, they're the same figure, but there are different narrative and mythological traditions associated with each, so we have two articles. —Josiah Rowe (talk • contribs) 04:12, 31 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
