Editing Ideas

Overall, this article has a lot of information and covers a large variety of different areas related to environmental racism. I went through and did small/minor grammar edits and edits for sentence structure. I also added a few sentences about the Standing Rock/NODAPL protests/event because there was not any information about the role of the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) for the tribe and how the Army Corps ignored the THPOS report about sacred sites. Because the page has so much information is it possible to combine sections in any way? I am also curious about how to include the United Nations and other international institutions in combatting these issues maybe in the "addressing environmental racism" section? I believe it would be beneficial to add information about factory farms and impoverished areas, as I have many sourced examples of factory farming being near minority and poor-income areas. There is zero mention of the environmental hazards of factory farming on this page and the risks it poses to the health and the overall well-being of the communities affected. I also think editing the article to include more current issues rather than cases with times and dates would give weight to the detrimental affects happening in present day. The history does help to paint a picture on the topic, but there is little information about today and what can be done in terms of bettering the problem. Overall, good article but a few things need to be scaled down and maybe other themes moved from this area. I think that the protest/activism area could definitely be improved and expanded. Are there too many examples of different environmental racism? Would a regional page for each area of the world work? The article is well written, well-cited/sourced. A more neutral tone could be worked on but this is difficult given the topic. I would work on showing historic events and maybe expanding certain areas. Just based on the length of this article, I also believe that it might be best to possibly have separate articles for environmental racism, one each for a specific region. For example, an article I've been editing is an article about climate change, however, the focus is on Mexico alone instead of on multiple regions throughout the world. Perhaps something similar to this might be done. Content-wise, there is certainly a depth of knowledge contained in this article. I thought the contribution made by James Iverson on the Romani people of Eastern Europe was a welcome addition, especially as it is really the only example of environmental racism in Europe that has been included. I also thought the addition of the "Climate Change and Environmental Racism" section by AbbringAustin provided needed background on why climate change is important to the issue of environmental racism.--Brmbuck (talk) 20:35, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

This article is super well organized because there is a lot of detail and I like how it was split by case studies of environmental racism. I was struggling to figure out how to organize the article which I have been working on and I think that separating the sections by case as well as location will make the page easier to follow. This page seems to be imbalanced in the sense that there is a lot of detail about some sections and some other sections like the “Impact of Health” section need development to be more comprehensive. I also think that there could be improvement with the definition of Environmental Racism to include a more global view to match the rest of the article rather than just focusing on environmental racism in the united states. I read through the article and made some corrections in some place with wording and grammar but overall it looks good.

I think that the authors of this entry did a fantastic job of giving a well-developed account of the history of environmental racism, ways of combatting the issue and presenting cases of the issue. I think that this gives readers a broad understanding of the concept and can help with seeing the reality of the environmental racism. I do have a few recommendations. First, I would limit the amount of connections between the topic and the United States. You have examples from all around the world but in the broader paragraphs, it has a U.S.A perspective which limits the scope of the page. Second, I think that a great addition to this page would be to address how environmental racism perpetuates the environmental crisis. Overall these are just additional recommendations! Great contributions! Appreciated the organization of the page. Everything was clear to follow, and material was presented in a neutral, comprehensive way. Recommend to include more citations in your paragraphs for readers to follow your sources and claims as they read. Also, having more infographics or graphs to show trends can be helpful if that is possible. Would be also good for traffic if you included a link to your page from the "Climate Change" page, since I feel like a lot of people may be on there and would not know much about Environmental Racism initially. Overall, the environmental racism Wikipedia page is a well-researched article that includes many aspects of the topic. Some things to consider: (1) combining Background and Definition sections, (2) using fewer quotes throughout, (3) narrowing focus of Cases section, (4) working on making the tone more neutral Jkwasser (talk) 19:29, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Excellent example of an article written by students under guidance of their lefty professors, with easily perceptible intent of "whiteys bad, republicans bad". For example, "Flint water crisis" only mentions Governor Rick Snyder as primary evildoer who knew about the problem but did nothing (uses Vice News hitjob article as source), even though city's elected government is primarily responsible for fixing city's problems (or at least identifying them and then asking for help if they are too big for a city to handle). In this case, CITY decided to switch to more corrosive water source - not state governor. CITY failed to detect the problem. Why is it written that way? I'ts simple: city's officials are Democrats. Snyder is a Republican.

If Wiki would continue on this track of political activism disguised as "encyclopedia", we won't be able to use wiki as a reasonably reliable source of information for anything related to United States issues.

I like that there are many examples of environmental racism in different areas of the country and in other countries. I think it is important to see how if effects different people in different locations. I agree with Julie, this page is well researched and goes really in-depth on a lot of things. It is well written but I think that something to consider when looking a topic with this big of a scope would be split some of the sections of this article into new different sections. Maybe by just focusing on cases of environmental racism in the United States and then having a page which focuses on global environmental racism. I think overall it is well referenced and cited, but some sections may need for expansion like the Impacts on Health, South Africa and Native American reservations sections. All that being said this is a great article I can tell you guys put in a lot of time into expanding the article the amount of information you all have collected in a short amount of time is awesome!!Ikigamwa (talk) 23:20, 7 April 2020 (UTC)

I really like the overall content of this page. The amount of information presented is incredible, and the research is amazing. With all the information that is presented, it may be helpful to readers to find a way to split up for easier reading and reference. The case section provides a tremendous amount of information on various cases but I fear it may be too overwhelming. I would suggest considering splitting up the cases sections to address cases by types rather than countries. This would allow your cases section to be slip up more give readers a faster index. You may also look into splitting sections into U.S. cases and world cases considering the amount of case studies provided from the U.S.Rnakovsk (talk) 21:32, 8 April 2020 (UTC)

The introduction is concise and does a very good job of briefly explaining what environmental racism is. This whole article was very well-written and I don’t have many comments to make. The section outlining instances of environmental racism in the US in extensive, but the rest of the world definitely has more cases then are mentioned in the article, so I would recommend finding more cases to add to the global outline. The tone of the article is overall neutral, but after reading the whole thing it is apparent that the authors have their own opinion on this issue, and although I agree with their opinion, it is important to solely present facts in a neutral manner, and I think that if someone is able to do this it strengthens their argument. Some arguments are presented, but these are not referenced and this gives the impression that the arguments are the author’s.

I am incredibly impressed by the level of work that has gone into this article. I can see that you have taken comments to heart and have really put in a great deal of effort into giving readers a comprehensive evaluation of the reality of environmental racism. Since this article is so long, I do recommend adding in more pictures, graphs or media elements. At times it is very language heavy so try to break it up with some engaging media! Additionally, I still think that there are more non-USA environmental racism cases that could added to this post. This article keeps getting better. I agree that the expansion of case studies would be helpful. However, i think that relocation of the case studies section may be better for the overall flow of the article. Possibly putting the case study section at the bottom of the page would allow for future case studies to be added in a way that would make navigation a little easier!Rnakovsk (talk) 18:27, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

The heading on climate change needs improvement

I am not sure if the section on climate change is in the right location (under background) and if the section heading is clear? Are we saying it is one of the causes? I came here because the article on Climate change and poverty had taken that section as an excerpt but the excerpt link was broken. Best to include a hyperlink comment that if people change the section heading that they need to also change it on the page where it's transcluded. EMsmile (talk) 08:11, 27 November 2020 (UTC)

Facts... We are supposed to be presenting facts.

All this article does is present conjecture. It presents happenstance and circumstance of life as a direct violation of the government against a certain race of people. That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. At least one of the stupidest things I've ever heard.

The article states the keystone pipeline doesn't even go anywhere near native American lands. It also lists reason after reason that are caused by cultures of certain minorities in this country as reasons that caused the problems. That's a load of bullshit. show me the study where it says in plain English that our government specifically put something hazardous near a minority population because there was a minority population. A study where they specifically said we will put this near African Americans because their African Americans. A study that says we will put this near Hispanics or native Americans because they are. You can't. No one can. Because those studies don't exist.

yet that's the whole point this article is trying to make. That our government is targeting minorities. Ludicrous

Why are there hazardous military sites near native American reservations? Go back and read the article and you can answer my question.

Is it a problem?

Yes it's a problem.

But it's a problem for all of us. It's not a racial issue. It's a citizens of the United States issue. I don't want that shit in my yard either. But I'm not going to go say that because I'm Mexican that they're targeting me and putting it in my yard. That is absurd. Beyond absurd.

This article is loaded with opinions of other people. Things that are not supposed to be allowed on Wikipedia. We're just supposed to present the factual basis of things. This article fails to do that in every way shape and form

New Article

I will be creating a new article titled "Environmental Racism in the US." There is no existing Wikipedia article about environmental racism in the US. While this article includes a section on the United States, a specific article is necessary in order to give a more extensive overview of environmental issues and their unequal effects on different racial groups within the US. "Environmental Racism in the United States" will borrow from parts of this article, but will also include more detailed information on environmental policy that has contributed to or reduced environmental racism, the unequal impact of natural disasters, and the environmental justice movement.

Here is an outline of the new article's planned sections and subsections:

United States examples

Thinking of ways to exchange some of the older examples with some more recent ones such as the Flint Michigan Water Crisis or Dakota Access Pipeline , would provide visitors of the page with background knowledge they have heard about before and connect them better to the topic.NordicNasty913 (talk) 01:18, 18 October 2016 (UTC)

I am going to be adding a section on urban heat island effect. Probably in the United States section but I think it is something that occurs world wide. I am still doing some initial research, but essentially greenery in an urban setting reduces the heat trap that city materials create. In low income communities with little greenery and natural spaces, there are increased deaths due increased temperatures. Bugcruncher (talk) 19:20, 5 October 2021 (UTC)

A recent example of environmental racism is the impact of Hurricane Harvey on neighborhoods of color in Houston, Texas. There are other examples of environmental racism in Houston (air pollution, placement of toxic waste facilities). I have made most of my edits to the article - please let me know if there are any mistakes/concerns you have! I changed the article to reflect a worldwide view of environmental racism by separating the cases by continent instead of US and International. For the Native American section, there are few different examples you could include such as -- mining and the Navajo reservation, the Apache and Oak Flat struggle, timber extraction, and the Menominee, or Bears Ears. More historic events and issues could be included such as other natural resources extraction happening on Native American land like the Black Hills in South Dakota and moving Native people out of that area for gold and uranium. I would also think about why Native Americans would put on reservations and maybe talk about National Parks and the removal of Native people from those areas.
