In this interview Lynch makes it sound as though the 63 days was for the Grandmother. He states that work is what got Splet installed as the head of sound at the AFI: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSkyGRyUIEM. They then worked together off and on over the 5 years of Eraserhead.
