Alternate name: Schratzlloch[edit]

Does anyone happen to know the legends behind the "dwarf folk" that might have inspired the Bavarian name of "Schratzlloch"? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rencheple (talkcontribs) 19:50, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Note that the Nordic word for dwarf(en)/zwerg(de) does not necessarily point to a small being, that's actually a later usage from late medieval times. The origin of the mythology about dwarfs is completely unknown - it might simply be a human tribe settling in the northern hemisphere before the arrival of the modern Cromagnon type. The Bavarian Schratz and Alemanic de:Schrat are related to the englisch Old Scratch. https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Old_Scratch ... the Christian influence has turned them all into devilish creatures during the middle ages. So the original meaning is mostly lost. Guidod (talk) 21:05, 26 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder if erdstalls were primitive jail cells. It might explain the tight quarters and difficult access. The design would maybe make it easy to secure the openings it seems. But I have never seen one in person to know. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1017:B118:F5E:3247:F2A6:91A0:8898 (talk) 22:28, 6 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
