defence/defense[edit]

I'm not about to start an edit war, but I looked at WP:Ice Hockey and couldn't find anything about defence vs. defense. I did however note that NHL.com refers to U.S. defencemen as "defencemen" http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=564344 174.95.17.194 (talk) 04:12, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Defence is much like honour and several other words that has different spelling in Canadian/American English. As such the typical way it is handled is is to use the spelling based on nationality of the player. The use of defenseman is consistent with other Americans like, Phil Housley, Jack Johnson (ice hockey), and Lee Sweatt off the top of my head.--Mo Rock...Monstrous (leech44) 04:22, 5 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
NHL.com also uses a mix of the S and C, using the S in articles here and here. Although it looks like it depends on where the source comes from for instance these two articles about Randy Jones one using the s here listed as NHL.com and this one using the c listed from the Canadian Press.--Mo Rock...Monstrous (leech44) 03:00, 6 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
