Doesn't she often play doubles teamed up with Jiske Griffioen? I know I've seen a lot of what appear to be competition pictures where they are on the same side of the net.

Losing count[edit]

Esther Vergeer's winning streak is jumping with leaps and bounds. The ITF site, which does not yet include the Beijing paralympics, reports a string of 333 wins, so she would be at 338 now (she played 5 single matches at the paralympics). However, before the paralympics I had calculated that it was already at 342, based on the number 303 in an ITF news article after the 2007 season. Perhaps, I thought, some of her matches were official, but for some reason not reported on the ITF site. The Canadian Press then reported that after her first win at the paralympics she was at 345. Perhaps I'd missed 2 in 2008. And then Amchow78's China Daily article says that 4 wins later again she is at 350 wins. It doesn't add up. My guess is that at least those last two articles just contain mistakes, as it's easy to loose track with these high numbers. Unfortunately, her personal website doesn't keep track either (she may not know exactly herself). Since the streak is becoming somewhat iconic, we'd appreciate it if someone could give us the real number. It should be anywhere between 338 and 350 as of September 15, 2008. According to this there was no women's doubles competition at the Australian Open in 2002 or 2003. According to the ITF (http://beta.itftennis.com/wheelchair/tournaments/calendar.aspx?tour=australian%20open&reg=&nat=&sur=&cate=&age=V35&iod=&fromDate=01-01-2002&toDate=31-08-2012) it was held in both years, with Vergeer losing in the final in 2002 and winning the competition in 2003.

Hi. Your list of Grand Slam titles for Esther Vergeer is currently incorrect. The first three French Open doubles titles for Esther are not, in fact, Grand Slam titles. Wheelchair Tennis did not make its competition debut at the French Open Grand Slam at Roland Garros until 2007.

Similarly, the first two US Open doubles titles listed for Esther are not Grand Slam titles. Wheelchair Tennis did not make it competition debut at the US Open Grand Slam until 2005.

In addition, Esther won the women's doubles event at the 2002 Australian Open Grand Slam, so there is one title to add there. Esther has a career total of 44 Grand Slam titles. across singles and doubles. I am a freelance consultant for the ITF Wheelchair Tennis Deparment and can verify these facts. 85.115.54.201 (talk) 13:32, 8 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
