To Do[edit]

I'd like to add some info about his early life, his scholarly work, his teaching career at BYU and elsewhere, and his death. I don't know much of anything about that stuff, so please help out! biggins (talk) 18:51, 14 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

McConkie Letter[edit]

I added a reference to the letter Apostle Bruce McConkie wrote England. It sheds some light on just why England would feel under fire for his work. Perhaps a full quote should be added to the article. I want to gauge the importance of this letter first, since it is provided by the MRM website primarily to criticize Mormonism, not the document England's life. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Carneadiiz (talk • contribs) 06:45, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The citation to MRM has been contested by 208.81.184.4 (talk). While it looks like it's a good reproduction of the original to me, I don't know what the website's scholarly reputation is. How about if we link to a pdf of the original letter hosted at EugeneEngland.org? [1] I do think it's necessary to include more than the Bushman quote because she's talking more about the general divisions between liberals and conservatives, as well as the inherent tensions between authority and individualism--which doesn't mention the content of the letter, which the sentence before summarizes. I believe this would fit the Wikipedia Primary Source guidelines, which state "A primary source may only be used on Wikipedia to make straightforward, descriptive statements of facts that can be verified by any educated person with access to the source but without further, specialized knowledge. For example, an article about a novel may cite passages to describe the plot, but any interpretation needs a secondary source." The summary of the McConkie letter given here strikes me as straightforward and descriptive, though we could include a short quote instead of a summary if others disagree. Opinion from Sunstone profile[edit]

The sentence was removed from the article: "This charitable, tolerant, and faithful approach to scholarship was a hallmark of his career and life."Monson, Dian Saderup (January 2002).
