Ethnic Backgroud[edit]

Hi! Mr. Melnyk is listed in the category "Jewish-Canadians" but he is also claimed to be a Ukrainian Canadian by some one that page and this article doesn't say anything about being Ukrainian. Does anyone have any more info on this? I think he may be descended from Jews from Ukraine, but the term "Ukrainian Canadian" usually refers to people who are ethnically Ukrainian, rather than people from other backgrounds that are from the territory of Ukraine. Does anyone know how he self-identifies? Anyway I'm not opposed to putting him in the Category of Ukrainian Canadians, but he may not be the strongest example to put on the main page.

If anyone knows about this, please let me know. Kevlar67 09:55, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I myself never heard the part about being Jewish-Canadian. It's possible??? I've definantly heard the part about his parents being Ukrainian-Canadian though.
Above are a few articles about Mr. Melnyk in which they do state Ukrainian heritage but no mention of his religious background. CaribDigita 12:17, 15 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

>>> He's Ukrainian Canadian and Ukrainian Catholic. I am a close family friend with who he grow up in Toronto<<<

^^ This is true. Perhaps we should start a page for Ukrainian Catholics?

He's pretty Ukrainian as it can get, he a major sponsor (as Bioval) for the Bloor West Ukrainian Festival in Toronto.

Yup, he also (founded, or was a major sponsor for the building of?) the Ivan Franko retirement homes in Toronto. Anyone have a ref for this? I think it would be good for the philanthropy section. I was just there today, beautiful small Ukrainian chapel in the complex as well. :) --Львівське (talk) 23:15, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tourette syndrome benefactor[edit]

Every bio I could find on this fellow claims he is a benefactor of the Canadian Tourette Syndrome Association. But, there's no such thing. It's either the Tourette Syndrome Foundation of Canada, or the Tourette Syndrome Association of the USA. I changed it to the Canadian entry, but it's not at all clear from his many online bios which one it actually is: if he's a benefactor, one would hope he would know the correct name of the organization. Maybe someone can clear that up. Sandy (Talk) 21:44, 9 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OSC Allegations?[edit]

Maybe there should be some info on his recent financial stuff. I heard he was being audited by somebody? CJ DUB 03:18, 9 April 2007 (UTC):[reply]

TSN OSC story

I removed the comment "free of Canadian taxes" because that isn't totally correct.[edit]

The international business sector laws of Barbados state that any offshore entity must file duplicate filings. One of these must be filed in the home country where the money can from, and one in Barbados. That way there's no "veil of offshore secrecy". Further, in order to comply with money laundering laws money sources must be very clear. Any money brought into Barbados as an offshore entity must be repatriated to the country of origin. It cannot use Barbados as a step to another location to help muddy it's source. Further, in order to keep offshore money from getting mixed-up with the local economy any offshore business unit operating in Barbados are NOT allowed to (legally) sell goods to Barbadian nationals or CARICOM nationals. The entity would have to establish a separate unit outside of the region in order to sell goods in Barbados. This keeps Barbadian-based business from taking advantage of the international business legislation for themselves. In terms of shielding from Canadian taxes, that too isn't exactly correct. Since companies are not allowed to pass profits through Barbados to other destinations, all profits in Barbados must eventually come back to Canada. In so doing, the Canadian shareholders must pay taxes on all profits coming back from any Barbados based entity (if the company is publicly held). So in actuality what most Canadian companies are doing is shifting their burden of taxation from themselves to their shareholders. However due to those tax savings, the companies are able to return bigger profits. So in actuality it balances out in the end. Many Canadian companies have used this as a way to boost their profits and in turn, use it as a way to level their global playing field by lowering their immediate taxation and placing it on shareholders. So if Melnyk leaves Barbados has must take it back to Canada. And at that time, when it comes back onshore it could be subject to taxation. CaribDigita (talk) 21:40, 23 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

He died on March 28, 2022[edit]

Per Ottawa Senators: He was also a successful horse racing breeder, twice named Canada's Outstanding owner. His horses won many of the sport's most coveted prizes, including the Canadian Triple Crown, the Travers Stakes in Saratoga and the Gold Cup in Barbados.

Suggestion that we replace Infobox picture?[edit]

The current infobox picture where he's looking away from the camera and we only see the side of his head seems like an odd choice. Surely there are other, better pictures available, such as this one that the Ottawa Senators just posted. ABarnes94 (talk) 03:15, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@ABarnes94: There's no evidence of a free license for that picture. —C.Fred (talk) 03:54, 29 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I've done a look for free licensed images of him, and nothing else has come up in my searches. If you find one, we can absolutely change it. RoyalObserver (talk) 13:20, 30 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Eugene "Krabs" Melnyk[edit]

Until I just fixed it, it referred to Melnyk above his picture as Eugene "Krabs" Melnyk. Apparently this is a reddit joke likening him to Mr. Krabs from Spongebob. Since this wasn't actually a real nickname for the man, I removed it. Erictyhu (talk) 04:48, 6 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
