Introductory Sentence[edit]

This intro sentence is meaningless - "favours the EU" ? in what ? What are the "aims of the EU" ? Not being a Europeanist myself - can someone please amend ? I am only looking for terms that have real meaning. Thanks--jrleighton 11:36, 24 February 2006 (UTC)

The sentence makes sense to me but I will think about how to make it clearer. The aims of the [European Union] are, paraphrased from one of the drafts of the EU constitution, to:

uphold democracy and fundamental rights

promote sustainable economic and social progress

live together in freedom, justice and peace

advance our common (European) interests in the world

create an ever closer Union among the peoples of Europe
